iTunes Review

Why? lead singer Yoni Wolf grapples with a host of big issues on 2009’s Eskimo Snow. This bleak yet playful work tackles intricate questions of sex and mortality with a fine sense of the absurd. In contrast to the hip-hop focus of previous efforts, Eskimo Snow favors sweet pop melodies dressed up in multi-layered arrangements with country, folk and Off-Broadway overtones. Wolf sings his intricately rhymed lyrics in a flat, pinched voice, tossing off droll observations about dead animals and self-abuse with a wry, often pained air. The downbeat content of the material is brightened by twinkling pianos, shimmering vibraphones and eruptions of snarling electric guitar. Standout tracks include “Even the Good Wood Gone” (a meticulously imagined tale of a mummy waking up in a museum), “Berkeley by Hearseback” (an evocative ballad with Old Testament references) and “This Blackest Purse” (matching a dazzling cascade of quirky imagery to a luminous, pulsating track). Smart, kooky and oddly moving, Eskimo Snow distills fun out of fatalism.

Evolution.

The musical style is a lot different from previous albums. Take the time to adapt.

It's a Shame

Eskimo Snow is, simply put, disspointing-- it's bland, it's flat, uneventful and boring. Sure, WHY?'s (perhaps only Yoni's) focus has always been lyrical content, but post-Alopecia, fans expect more from WHY's final product(s). Alopecia showed us that an evolution was taing place in WHY?; well it seems that yes an evolution DID take place, but only within the limited confines of the Alopecia Vacuum. In terms of lyrics like always their up to par, and as always their humorous, insightful, introspective (in an expressive way), and above all flat-out entertaining. Unfortunately, the lyrics are almost entirely impossible to decipher--masked by some mysterious effect that jumbles/mumbles and echoes Yoni's voice to a frustrating level. Where ALopecia was an album tooled with ballads that were so very purposeful and finely-combed--each meticulously refined, Eskimo Snow boasts ballads that are meaningless, unoriginal, and, thankfully, over in a a flash. Let's hope that 'Eskimo Snow' is only a breather, or some warranted (considering ALopecia's quality) victory lap, but one thing is for certain, its not a great album.

Bitchin

I was skeptical of this album when i first heard it but over time it grew on me more than i expected it to. It has somewhat of a different sound than their other albums but all of their albums difer in certain ways. I'd say it's definitely worth buying along with all of their other work.
