Four Tops
As a kid growing up in Detroit, everyone could tell you about the Motown experience. The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson all of whom, an the many more Motown Artist that bought homes in Northwest Detroit. Today, I still see Duke Fakir at the grocery store or at Dr. K's dental office on Grand Blvd. These songs, Baby I need your lovin, It's the Same Old Song, Catfish, Bernadette are love tunes for the ages. They take me and many others back to a unique time, growing up in Detroit when there was plenty of work and the Bosses were indeed paying.
Awesome
Radio was different in the 60's when I grew up in D.C. There were no "play lists" the DJ played whatever. So I got to hear Motown, Nashville, Hippie... whatever, all on the same station. That's still how I like my music. I saw the 4 Tops in Chicago a few years ago. Still awesome, although with some changes in membership.
Walk Away Renee
I dig the Four Tops, and this album is great. However, I want to point out to anyone who loves the song "Walk Away Renee", that the original by the band the Left Banke (unfortunately not listed on iTunes yet), is INFINITELY more emotional and compelling. There really isn't a comparison. The Four Tops pounded out this song by precision, and the song isn't meant to be a sharp pop song, but more of a baroque wail. It is a very sad song, haunting and beautiful when it's done by the Left Banke. The closest version to theirs is by "three sides" here on itunes. I wish iTunes could score a Left Banke album from 1966. Their second hit, "Pretty Ballerina" is almost as great. Lyrics like "I called her yesterday it should have been tomorrow I could not keep the joy that was inside I begged for her to tell me If she really loved me Somewhere a mountain is moving I'm afraid it's moving without me" You can't go wrong. The Left Banke should be available on itunes!
