Album Review

The breaks aren't quite as funky as they used to be, but with his Essential Mix, DJ Icey moves the earthy big-beat style forward to embrace futuristic breakbeat trance and electro. Icey also keeps the energy level peaking throughout, even while he ropes in a cast of musically varied producers and remixers, from big-beat rawkers Freestylers to trance maestros Novy Vs. Eniac to Detroit electro mainstay DJ Godfather to symphonic techno forebears Orbital (plus four of his own productions). In an era when the heavily commercial side of progressive trance is usually a DJ's easiest way out, Icey's Essential Mix warps the style until it meets his own ends.

Icey's best work to date

Let me start by saying that I've listened to his work for ten years now, ever since I got ahold of a mix tape back in 1996. This album is his best work so far. The breaks beat anything put out by any other artist this year. Highly recommended for any Icey fan.

Biography

Born: Florida

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s

DJ Icey's breakbeat funk helped jump-start the increasingly fertile dance scene in and around Orlando, FL, during the '90s. Born and raised in the Sunshine State, Icey first got into music via early-'80s synth pop, industrial, and hip-hop. The boom in club music during the late '80s hooked him as well, and when he began DJing early in the '90s, he usually played out acid house and funky breaks. He gained a residency at The Edge, one of Orlando's seminal clubs, and soon began playing farther afield...
