iTunes Review
Although technically this was their second consecutive "live" release (and third since 1969), Europe '72 was intended to serve as a "studio" album, introducing a slew of new, mostly country-inflected songs to their catalog. With their Old West imagery and distinct twang, Jerry Garcia-Robert Hunter compositions like "Ramble on Rose," "Brown Eyed Women," and "Tennessee Jed" (plus the Hunter-Pigpen stomp "Mr. Charlie" and the Hunter-Bob Weir saga "Jack Straw") all fit together superbly as a kind of Americana song cycle, giving the set a welcome cohesiveness. There are also vibrant, extended readings of earlier favorites like "Sugar Magnolia," "Truckin'," and "China Cat Sunflower"/"I Know You Rider." As a live album, Europe '72 doesn't have quite the energy, rawness, and spontaneity of subsequent live releases, but it's still an indispensable document of a band at a particularly fertile place in their history, performing some of their most memorable material.
Customer Reviews
The Best Album Ever By the Best Band Ever
This album represents the Grateful Dead at the pinnacle of their performance. Though the Dead are always fantastic instrumentally, in this album, they are absolutely perfect and on top of that, the vocals are the best of any Dead recording ever, with flawless harmonies that are sure to amaze. Every song on the album is fantastic. The China Cat to I Know You Rider is probably the best one ever with perfect harmonies and an amazing accapella part at the end. Truckin' into Morning Dew represents the Dead’s fantastic jamming capabilities and the Morning Dew is truly magical. Jack Straw and Brown Eyed Women are also mind blowing. I could go on and on about each song, but instead I’ll just say buy this album. Now. It’s the greatest album in the world by the greatest band in the world. If your wondering weather to get the bonus tracks, know this: if you don’t like Pigpen or you’re not already a Grateful Dead fan (which after this album I guarantee that you will be) then don’t get them. If you do like pigpen but your still not sure then I would say go big and get them because they’re pretty cool. Pigpen sings throughout the Good Lovin’ and doesn’t stop until the second Good Lovin’ ends. Its great.
Damned good, though not strictly "live"
When they got home from Europe, the Dead set up all of the sound equipment they had used on tour ("to capture the ambience") and put down additional tracks which they mixed into the tracks that were recorded on the road, thus filling in the holes and some of the rough edges encountered on the tour. The result was perfection, but not purely live.* Don't let that turn you away from this album, you won't find a better live album by this or any other band. *Scully & Dalton, "Living With the Dead," page 228.
The best, period.
Doesnt get better than this.
