Album Review

Eiffel 65's vocoder-heavy Europop, which yielded the major international dance smash "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," falls somewhere in the dance music spectrum between Daft Punk and the Vengaboys. It employs funky, deep house grooves with vocoder enhanced vocals, similar to Daft Punk and Modjo, yet many of the songs incorporate nursery rhyme choruses and solid pop stylings. The album has its share of "Blue" soundalikes, some better than others. For example, "Dub in Life," "Another Race," "Hyperlink (Deep Down)," and the unremarkable second single "Move Your Body" all sound like "Blue" and offer very little else. "Silicon World," on the other hand, also recalls their hit, but takes the formula into a much cooler and sophisticated direction. This album really succeeds, however, when the formula is stretched and the act tackles different musical styles. "Too Much of Heaven" is an intelligent, funky, anti-capitalist dance song, and "Living in a Bubble" is an interesting, string-enhanced hip-hop track. "Your Clown" is gothic and dark, and unmistakably recalls Depeche Mode. "Now Is Forever" is a trippy, shuffling slice of house, and "Europop," despite its title, is the album's acid house representative. Eiffel 65 will mostly be remembered for its hypnotic smash "Blue," however, and its less than stellar follow-up "Move Your Body." But if one digs deeper, then this album offers several surprises and interesting dance grooves. ~ Jose F. Promis, Rovi

I Never Thought Id Love It

Im not to big on Electronic music, but my brother bought this album about 4 or 5 years ago in Miami and we listened to it on our whole vacation. Every song is great, especially Living In A Bubble, Silicon World, Dub In Life, Too Much of Heaven, The Edge, heck their all great (exept for My Console, that ones a little off). This album is a deep and great memory in my life, so why not make it yours

Generally underappreciated

Unless you were in a bomb shelter for the duration of the '90s, chances are good you're already familiar with "Blue (Da Ba Dee)." As far as the general population is concerned, the fact that this song was the only one played regularly made them a "one-hit wonder." However, most of these people never listened to the entire album and that's a crying shame. This is one of the rare albums out there where just about every single song is enjoyable. Songs like "Too Much of Heaven," "Dub in Life," and "Your Clown" went entirely unnoticed. That's hardly to say that those are the only songs worth listening to. At a price lower than the average album on iTunes, what are you waiting for? Maybe if we show enough support for Eiffel 65, Apple will add their other two albums to the store!

A classic techno album for the ages...

...or at least the 90s. I feel like something must be said about this group on my part, because I basically grew up listening to this album (and Britney Spears, but let's not get in to that for now). I like the group's style, first of all. It's something much richer than you usually get out of techno, especially for a europian-based band. The stand-out tracks, easily, are "Blue" (of course), "Too Much Heaven," "Living in a Bubble," "Move Your Body," and "My Console." As the professional review states, most of these songs sound very similar to "Blue" itself, but offer a few new twists. I particularly like the strings and piano in "Living in a Bubble." They add a new side and a sofisticated tone to the music, symbolizing the eloquence of this group's effort. Another track that I feel does not receive enough credit is "Europop." The iTunes sample does not do it justice, on any scale. It only plays the song's very beginning. The "song" itself doesn't start happening until about a minute into the track. By then it becomes an infectious, delectable, and very danceable song about Eiffel 65's pride in being European and representing their continent through music. This is, in my opinion, a very well-planned track, with some cool European radio "banter" in the first 40 seconds. Don't pass it up because of the sample. Overall, this group has (or maybe I should say "had," considering that they were a bit of 1-hit wonder of their era) plenty of smarts as far as giving the people what they want. I've been listening to it ever since my friend got it for me as a birthday gift in '96, and it still hasn't worn out for me yet. Give the album a chance... you'll be pleasantly surprised.
