Album Review
On Everlasting Love, Vanessa Williams covers her favorite soul songs of the '70s, often with help from the London Session Orchestra. This is a classy set of material that straddles the line between faithful renditions and creative reinterpretations. The strummy folk-soul of the Isley Brothers' "Harvest for the World" is turned into jazz-funk for the dancefloor; the natural exuberance within "Never Can Say Goodbye" is toned down a few degrees, thanks in part to George Benson's guitar and James "D-Train" Williams' (!) backing vocals. Nothing really grabs you by the throat or makes your body hairs stand on end, but that's all right. Williams' music career has almost always had more to do with caressing the ears than anything else. This disc is nothing if not a fan pleaser.

The Rise and Fall of a Beauty Queen...
Vanessa, Vanessa, Vanessa... when will we see YOU again, not what your producers think you should be doing? This album reminds me of the quintessential beauty pageant flop... just bear with me for a moment... She nails the talent portion flawlessly, delivering the tunes in true Vanessa WIlliams fashion - silky, smooth, and mellow; she easily passes the swimsuit competition; her ageless beauty still shines through in all its radience; she wows the judges with her interview - the songs chosen for the compilation are excellent selections, full of potential... Then comes the evening gown competition, and she falls on her face quite painfully in a hideous chartreuse and pink gown by means of obtuse and lackluster production and gaudy musical acoutrements - this compilation's greatest weaknesses. There are just way too many flaws to point out - whether it be the music not fitting the song (You are Everything), or the song just just not sounding aurally pleasing altogether (I'll Be Good to You). This album on an intrensic level had so much potential, but the wrong mix of singer/producer can make even the most classic piece seem paltry. Standouts on this album are "Never Can Say Goodbye" which takes The Jackson's hit and coats it in silk, making it the wistful, lamentatious song it was meant to be; "Harvest for the World", a retooling of The Isley Brothers' classic hit that actually infuses the song with new life and new energy; and "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", an interpretation that is sure to make even Roberta Flack applaud in admiration and respect for her talent. Hopefully, Vanessa will return to what she does best - upbeat, positive danceable music.
Everlasting Love is a super album.
Beautiful album with great music. If you are in love, this is the best music to hear. Vanessa Williams is a terrific artist anyway, but when you are madly in love with someone, these words seem to speak to you.
Loved It!!!!!
All due respect to Malachite...but I think you missed it on this one. I (and it seems others) feel Vanessa nailed it. Yeah, we've heard these all before, but Vanessa did them with her flair. Perhaps I was so taken by the smoothness of her renditions I didn't notice the production flaws. Nonetheless I have and continue to recommend this collection to anyone looking for good adult R&B. I love this CD and look forward to hearing the songs on my Pod. Take Care...One Love!
