iTunes Review

Down to a trio (original bassist Markku Lappalainen left the band) since their previous release, The Reason, Hoobastank turns in an album with a leaner sound. That’s not to say they don’t still rock — they clearly do — but their approach has changed. Where their drumbeats were once plodding and pounding, they’re more nimble and dynamic here, and in the case of “Born to Lead,” deliver an unexpected four-on-the-floor dance beat. The still-catchy guitar riffs are less muscular than on prior releases, as the band moves closer to power chords and arena rock big choruses. They also pull off some convincing and well-written ballads in “Moving Forward” and “More Than a Memory,” both of which display the band's evolving softer side. They also bring a greater range of instruments to Every Man for Himself, most notably horns, keyboards, strings, and some acoustic guitar, giving an added depth to the band’s sound. Overall, it’s a more mature sound for Hoobastank, yet one which should still appeal to the bulk of their big fan base.

Hoobastank is HERE

Well. I was quite worried by Hoobastank's single "If I were you" because... well it was dinky, and the lyrics.... not so hot. It wasn't awful, but i was afraid that EMFH would be like that. But boy was I wrong! EMFH is very very good, and i think easily Hoobastank's best album. It is different yet it retains a familiar sound. It may be sort of on the pop side, but it is amazing pop rock. This is pop rock at its best. Born to lead is probably the least poppy of the songs, and maybe also the best. It reminds me of three days grace's Animal I have Become. Heres a quick rundown of my opinoin on each song. Born to Lead- 9.5/10- Strong, song, good beat, not very pop, good for rock fans Moving Forward- 8/10 poppy, soft song, but still very good. Soothing onthe ears after hearing Mr drill sergant on Born to Lead Inside of you- 8.5/10- Great beat, really fun song, but is it just me or is he talking about sex? The First of Me- 9.5/10 Possibly the best song on the album, as good if not better than BtL. Very cool message Good Enough- 7.9/10 Its good, but not the best on the album, very much like old hoobastank, lyric wise If I Were You- 7.5/10- Umm.... it grew on me? Its a good song if you like pop or the liked the Reason, but really.... its ummm not that great. But i like the guitar "solo". Without a Fight- 7.9- same league as good enough. Don't Tell Me- 8.5- good, and has a guitar solo! sweet guys! i like it! Nice message too. Look Where We Are- 8.3- Nice guitar work guys! I like. Good song Say the Same- 7.9- good, but it didn't stick out. If Only- 9.0- I really like this song, very poppy, but very good. If you like the reason and If I were you ull love this. More than a Memory- 8.0 - lots of people like this song... but its a bit drawn out. and the accordian... is a bit cheesy. but the flute is beautiful The bottom line is, Hoobastank has grown, and now is a much much better band than they were before (although i really liked them before too) This is a must buy for any hoobastank fan, and if you like pop, there is finally somethign poppy thats good! If you like rock, I think you should probably buy this, because it is good rock, and it may be poppy, but its damn good pop. Way to good hoobastank, Love it!

Great album

I've been reading all of these reviews and seeing many comparisons to their last album, "The Reason," however, if any of you have listened to their self titled album or the albums before that, you'd know that they were trying to get back to their old sound. The Reason was an okay album...it had it's good moments, but for the most part it was made to satisfy the demands of the label....the lyrics on most of the album are radio friendly and pretty uninspired. This album gets back to Hooba's hardcore roots, and unique sound that made them great before they hit the mainstream. Complete with hardcore guitar solos, great, passionate lyrics and performance, and (my personal favorite) an assortment of different sounds...toy piano's, flutes, and Hoobastank signature horns, this is a classic album from a great band who have come full circle. Great Album, stop comparing it to the Reason, start comparing it to the old, true Hoobastank.

Hoobastank - Every Man For Himself

It has been three years since Hoobastank’s previous installment “The Reason” and when I heard that they were putting out a new CD my interest was perked to see what this quartet could do and where they had decided to take their music. When the day arrived I was disappointed, to say the least, though I wasn’t surprised at my dislike of the album, in fact, I was expecting it. Hoobastank has come a long way from their first self-titled debut back in 2001 which was filled to the brim with energy and enthusiasm that I liked. While it was nothing new, it was definitely a good rock CD from a promising band. The next release in 2003 titled after their huge hit radio song “The Reason” was also good, though it did not pack the same punch that their previous CD had. This CD, “Every Man For Himself”, while it is decent, shows me that all the success has gotten to their heads. There isn’t really any standout tracks to me and it seems like on a few of the songs (I won’t name names but I am sure you can figure it out) they tried to duplicate the song “The Reason” in all it’s FM Radio glory. I am sure they will fool some of you, but I have better things to do then listen to a remake of “The Reason”, one of those things happens to be listen to “The Reason”, which on a whole is a better album anyway.

Biography

Formed: 1994 in Agoura Hills, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

While the heavy alternative sounds of Tool and Alice in Chains were primary influences on Hoobastank's sound, the post-grunge quartet tempered the gloomier elements of such music with a suburban California groove and an eye for accessibility. Formed in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills in early 1994, the band's earliest members were vocalist Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin, who met each other at a high-school battle of the bands competition. The two chose to join forces, adding bassist Markku...
