iTunes Review

Television broke her career — Ingrid Michaelson songs first appeared on One Tree Hill, Grey’s Anatomy and an Old Navy commercial — but her fourth studio album sounds groomed for radio and anyone who's ever leaped before looking will identify with the powerfully emotional opener “Soldier.” Michaelson says this album is more autobiographical than her others, and she recorded a voluminous 40 songs before selecting the 12 that comprise Everybody. Touring with Jason Mraz may have seeped into her songwriting subconscious because the breezy title track sounds like it was written for him to cover — it floats and bobs like a cork on the ocean with ukulele strumming over a catchy singalong chorus. “The Chain” begins like one of her familiar piano ballads before beautiful layers of vocal rounds and dynamically stacked instruments swell up to birth a three-minute epic. Though “Maybe” is the obvious hit, “Mountain and the Sea” is more endearing and crush-worthy with its flirty lyrics, layered handclaps and analog synthesizers.
