Album Review

Passafire cover a lot of ground for a reggae band. The foursome — Ted Bowne, lead singer and guitarist; keyboard ace Adam Willis; and the rhythm-heavy Kubley brothers, drummer Nick and bassman Will — ranges far and wide, not content to merely work variations on Jah music. They also bring elements of jazz, hard rock, dub, ska, and pop to the table, not to mention their youthful enthusiasm and polished musicianship. Their second outing, Submersible, got a nod from iTunes when it placed in the Top Ten Reggae Album list in 2007. "Carouser" opens with Bowne showing off his prowess laying down an extended effects-laden excursion into dark metallic guitar territory while the Kubleys supply an echoing dub backbeat. Midway through they settle into a smooth, relaxed ska groove while they sing of rowdy good times "surfing in the snow." Bowne closes the track with another impressive guitar throwdown. "Illuminate" combines funky drumming, R&B keys, crunchy hard rock guitars, and a pleasing pop melody that alternates between funk and ska — the sharp harmony vocals have a hint of the Police in their delivery. The reggae-rocker "Queen of Spades" rides a jaunty one-drop rhythm, and benefits from the remarkable Hammond B-3 work of Willis and the inventive rhythm accents of the Kubley brothers. Willis takes the lead on "Prelectricity," the slow, grinding reggae groove that brings the album to a close. A horn section pops up, adds a few jazzy asides, and then gets buried in a final onslaught of metallic guitar noise. The murky mix often makes the music less bright than it should be, and often obscures the lyrics, but it's obvious that the bandmembers have a lot on the ball and they probably bring the fire when they play live. ~ j. poet, Rovi

Album of the Year

Passafire's unrelenting need to grow as a band and produce the best dub-rock / reggae fusion on the planet has paid off in a big way with "Everyone on Everynight." The fullness of the sound these four gents produce has matured like a fine wine and they are certainly ready for the inevitable stardom they are about to receive. This music will keep your foot tapping in the car but can also guide you through deep thoughts while sitting on the porch watching the sun set. Total package. Game over. Album of the year. You heard it here first.

The Best Reggae/Rock Band

Passafire has been making quite the name for themselves over the last couple of years and this album will surely boost their ongoing popularity. They have such a unique sound that translates amazingly both on record and live. This is their 3rd album and continues to show a growth and evolution of sounds. The album kicks right off w/ "Casting Of The Cares" which combines rocksteady reggae, a 50's rock vibe, and an Iron Maiden styled guitar solo yet it never once feels forced is a seemless flow. "Lay Awake" has a unique sound to it as well. It also seems like it's an old school ska song but with a unique Passafire vibe and a huge sounding distored bassline in the hooks and break down. The keyboards weave through this one effortlessly to give it the true Passafire sound. "Illuminate" is their longest track that will make you dance, bang your head, and flick your ligthers all in one. "Here In Front Of Me" is definitely their most radio-friendly and accesible song, and I mean that in the best possible way. I really hope it gets some radio attention and is the start of a new sound in popular music. It may be weird to say, but the bigness and catchiness of the chorus almost seems like the band Journey. The vocals are harmonious throughout the song, and the breakdown is especially trippy with vocals in a round style. The album continues to go through phases of reggae/dub, rock, and funky slapped bass and comes to another interesting track, "You're Here". I describe this song as being as though The Beatles recorded Sgt. Pepper's LonelY Hearts Club Band in the modern day. It has melotron keyboards, sparse and delayed guitar, upbeat drums, and a deep and groovin' bassline as always. "The King" is notable for being Passafire's most horn driven song and also their most roots styled dub song they have recorded. It's am homage to dub great, King Tubby, and it's a hell of a fitting song for that. The album nears an end with the hard rockin' "Leave The Lights On" that has an old school 311 type of riff, reggae verses, and then a bridge that features Beach Boys styled backing vocals and matching guitar and twinkling keyboard melody. The last track, "Prelectricity" is a nice way to wrap up the album as it has a familiar Passafire style of reggae but also jazzy interludes throughout the song and harmonized vocals, but then the song kicks in the crunchy guitars, pounding drums and bass, and atmospheric keyboards to finish out the disc before hitting you with the acoustic versions of "Casting of The Cares" and "Carouser".

Overall, each member of Passafire has really stepped up their game to creat an album that is undeniably Passafire, but breaks much ground and is an overall solid effort. This is one of the best album's I've heard in years. This band gets lumped in w/ Pepper, Slightly Stoppid, etc, but they are way better than any of those bands. My review above did not give enough props to the bass work throughout the disc. It truly puts them over the top. Pick up this album if you're into reggae, rock, dub, alternative, or just plain good original music
