Great Album
Jack's Mannequin is an expirimental band started by Andrew McMahon, the lead singer for Something Corporate (another great band). This album is full of great songs, many of which are way different than any other songs most people have heard. My favorite song has to be "I'm Ready" which has a very poetic narration thoroughout it. The lyrics are put together so well it's like you are in heaven when you listen to it. Great job Jack's Mannequin!
No surprises here...just great music
Of course it’s easy to compare Andrew McMahon’s latest endeavor to his previous: Something Corporate succeeded immensely with Poppy Angst driven Emo Rock. Their first two commercial albums were huge. But Jack’s Mannequin is more refined, and less whiney. McMahon’s Lyrics are still sad, introverted, and intensely narrative, but they sound mature and far more thoughtful. The album has great continuity and flow from song to song. You can listen to this one straight through, all the songs are catchy, the hooks still have that great sound, with a far more west coast derivative sound. This album makes this mid-westerner want to take off his shoes and head to the beach! Given Andrew’s current medical ailment, it is so inspiring to see him continue kicking out new material that builds and advances his repertoire and style. It is nothing we shouldn’t expect from a great artist though. Highly recommended!
This is a story...
This album, literally, is a story. Of coming home, the unsettling feeling of being away for too long. Of nothing you remember being the same, of a pheonix rising from the ashes. Leaving and coming back, breaking up with a loved one and living with it afterwards is probably one of the hardest things to do, but he does not leave you stuck in the past, he leaves you with hope, complete unbridled hope, which is one of the most beautiful things in the world and he captures it perfectly. I personally reccomend Bruised, where he is dwelling in a beautiful nostalgia, with metaphors and imagery that send chills down my spine. Also, Dark Blue is one of the greatest love songs ever written, which my mother can attest to, as she has been around for a bit longer than I and would know more. The climax in this song brings tears to my eyes, what a beautiful song. Rescued, probably the most beautiful musical composition in this story, a lullaby. And finally, Into the Airwaves, which will leave you with such a high feeling after it ends. This album surpasses the "emo" labels that Andrew McMahon often receives, and I will repeat myself, this is a story full of hope, full of inspiration mixed perfectly with the reality of the world, which he also has an amazing grasp on. ALso, try Lonely for Her, and the Lights and Buzz. This album is exactly what I needed. Listen to it with an open mind.
