Guillermo Herren’s (a.k.a. Prefuse 73) 2009 release, Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian, feels more like a casual road trip than a grand journey. For those familiar with earlier Prefuse 73 albums, Ampexian bears a number of familiar signposts, one of which is the voice of Claudia Deheza of School of Seven Bells. As in the past, her easy-to-recognize and easy-to-like vocals are a welcome addition to Herren’s hip-hop rooted electronica. Lately, Herren has added prog-rock to the genres he skillfully incorporates into his music. “No Lights Still Rock” matches funky beats and atonal keyboards before it finds a sound that evokes Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention circa 1969’s Uncle Meat. The next track, “Gaslamp Killer Feedback Text” chugs like dub reggae, while one passage in “Punish” features eerie strings. “Regalo” sports wordless vocals and a shivering rhythm, and “Simple Loop Choir” creates an alluringly floaty ambience. Ultimately, Herren is liable to absorb and transform just about anything into his inviting sound and flow.

Yep. Strong.

GSH is back! A strong project that puts him ahead (again!) in the genre that gives us Flying Lotus, Machine Drum, Afta-1, Lukid, Skymark, diyTokion. Prefuse 73 forged the path into dreamy-glitchy-hip hop-electronica. This is his strongest since One Word Extinguisher. A definite buyer — not a rapidshare freebie.

File alongside Donuts and the Beat Konducta series

This return to form is the strongest Prefuse 73 release since Extinguished Outtakes. Like Extinguished Outtakes and Prefuse 73's best work, Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian joyfully exudes a devil-may-care punk attitude. It is also thrilling to hear Herren discovering fresh territory - tracks like Fountains of Spring, Regalo and Four Reels Collide have no real precedents in the Prefuse catalog. As with Donuts and the Beat Konducta series, leave expectations of conventional song lengths and structures at the door. Also, like its Dilla and Madlib cousins, it is best consumed in one sitting.

Buy this album!

You can't really judge this album by listening to only the samples. You have to get the album and listen to it all the way through the understand why it's so good. All the songs hold each other up, and it unifies the whole album. And some songs, I do listen to over and over again, out of context, like DEC. Machine Funk All ERA's, Fountains of Spring, and Regalo. :)

Prefuse 73 is the alias of Scott Herren, an experimental hip-hop producer whose material often features MCs buried in the mix to become more a part of the sonic texture than a focal point. Herren began his career working in commercial studios in Atlanta, but later went on to more experimental work.
