Album Review

Rooted in New York hardcore aesthetic, but not in traditional hardcore per se, Glassjaw falls under a new breed of bands that pay homage to the traditional chant and response of classic NYHC (New York Hardcore) but without the chants, and without the shout-outs. If you think that makes little sense, so does Glassjaw's non-linear music. And even though Glassjaw doesn't look like an aggro rock band, they very much are. At least on paper. Featuring extraordinary ambidextrous drummer Sammy Siegler (of Gorilla Biscuits/CIV fame), Glassjaw has paired up with producer/entrepreneur Ross Robinson (a key catalyst in the reinvention of the aggro rock sound) to take you on a pummeling ride that would make Bad Brains and Quicksand proud. Along with Robinson's unorthodox production, Glassjaw places an inordinate emphasis on Daryl Palumbo's somewhat atonal voice, putting it at the forefront of the album's mix. His intense delivery wraps around the music, giving it an edge that one wouldn't otherwise expect. Intensely dense, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence succeeds on many levels. With Palumbo's ability to completely and unequivocally assault the senses with his voice, the subversive riffs of guitarists Beck and Todd Weinstock take songs like "Pretty Lush" and "When One Eight Becomes Two Zeros" to impressive places. With few choruses to speak of, the band literally piledrives the menacing material into the ground. Much like the Deftones, Glassjaw changes gears when you least expect it.

Best Album

This album is hard to describe. Daryl Palumbo's vocals are incredible! I will admit, many (many) years ago when I first heard Glassjaw I was kind of sickened at the sound. But I found myself listening over and over and over, and I couldnt stop.. I got this album, listened to it so much that I had to buy another because my original copy gave up the ghost. This is a very angry and hurt album and I love it. If there was a way to put my life memories on a cd, this would be it. This is NOT I repeat NOT anything like Head Automatica. If you are here because you're expecting something similar you will be disappointed. This album is 100% hard rock and talent. Screaming, singing, crazy riffs.. its all here. Its incredible how two guitars can play crazy off tune riffs with each other, and some how make it blend into a masterpiece.. may be compared to the likes of At the Drive-In's way of blending guitars. This album is very original and will be something new and amazing to listen to. GET IT.

Amazing.

I had been searching for a long, long time for a band that I could really like. There's too many bands out there today that are just going through the motions, copying another bands sound, making a whole record out of the same song with barely noticeable changes. Not only does Glassjaw create a new sound unique to them and only them, but the vocalist, Daryl Palumbo (if that's spelled right) makes you feel what he feels. I've never heard someone so completely passionate about music, and about what they have to say. Glassjaw's Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence, at first might sound repulsive, or messy. But after listening to it a couple times, you're hooked. That mess of emotions is exactly what they want you to hear. It's emotion turned straight into music. It's perfection. If you like real music, then this album is something you MUST have.

Emotion? Check.

Here's the deal people: the music on this album is the human condition stripped of everything that is pretty and normal. Yes, it sounds very dramatic, but so is the music. All the anger, frustration, sadness, hurt, and lonliness that we have all felt at one point or another is contained within these 12 songs. And no, I'm not some 16 year-old emo kid that hates his parents and gets off on sadness. I am, however, a person that can enjoy and appreciate the depths of emotion that can be felt listening to this music. Even people that like this type of music (although in my opinion Glassjaw is in a genre all by itself) may not like what this album has to offer. Listen to the music...then listen to it again...then listen to it one more time just to make sure that what you feel and love actually exists. If you are one that likes the beautifully tragic aspects of life, then you will love this music.
