iTunes Review

Seventeen year-old Michelle Branch impresses in a variety of ways on her 2001 debut The Spirit Room. Her vocals are assertive yet vulnerable, avoiding a strident tone without coming across as prissy. There are hints of Belinda Carlisle’s breezy style in her singing, as well as the urgency of Alanis Morissette. Branch’s songwriting is heartfelt and solid, rooted in classic pop with a few country elements added. Producer John Shanks surrounds her with bright contemporary sounds, adding a hip-hop groove here and an atmospheric synthesizer backdrop there. Romantic complications are Branch’s primary lyric focus, with “Everywhere,” “All You Wanted” and “Sweet Misery” oscillating between anticipation and disillusionment. She delivers an appealing anthem for teen misfits with “You Get Me” and gets likeably snarky on “If Only She Knew.” The luminous “Drop In the Ocean” balances such moments with its compelling spiritual undercurrent. The Spirit Room finds her opening creative doors and striding through with confidence.

The first time i heard everywhere was when i was in my first grade p.e class! i loved it! but i never knew who it was by! a few years later, i heard another song by michelle, all you wanted, and i thought, i never have heard that name before! a few years after that, around foruth grade, i searched michelle branch on this music store. i heard are you happy now, breathe, and all you wanted. but it wasnt till summer 2008, that i finally remembered that i didnt know who sang " everywhere" . so one rainy night i got out of bed, came down stairs, and typed in some words that i thought might be the title. i tried " im not alone", and " everywhere to me" , and then, finally, " everywhere" as soon as i saw teh name michelle branch, i clicked on it and i knew right away that the song i was listening to was the one i had heard so many times before. now one of my greatest heroes is michelle branch. i am learning to play the guitar, and soon i hope to be on stage like her.
all in all, a great album. definetly worth $10.00.

I got this album for my fourth birthday! I love all the tracks on it, but especially Something To Sleep To, Everywhere, All You Wanted, You Set Me Free, Here With Me and I'd Rather Be In Love! I love Michelle and flipped out when she sang the National Anthem at the NHL All-Star Game, and also when I saw she had a new single (Sooner Or Later), and am SUPER excited for the album! Go Michelle Go!!
