Album Review

Brian McKnight's lone set of non-Christmas material for Warner Bros., 2006's Ten, peaked exactly where his previous six proper albums topped out (within the Top Five of Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart), yet he finds himself on E1 (formerly Koch) for Evolution of a Man. Though he has written and produced plenty of his own material in the past, he did it all on this one, and presumably provided much of its instrumentation. It's a set that is predominantly slow, sparse, and intimate. Most of the album's last two-thirds offers familiar McKnight fare — sensitive, soothing backdrops that are at least comforting when not uplifting. Earlier on, as well as in a couple instances deeper into the album, McKnight takes some risks with tracks that contain little more than pattering percussion and twinkling keyboards; here, the sonics are more memorable than the songs, and not much of the album as a whole holds up to repeated listening. Some of McKnight's devoted fanbase will find the album rather fascinating since it's a change of pace, more a collection of loose sketches than a highly polished set.

Customer Reviews

Mixing the Old with the New... With Mixed Results.

When it comes to the amazing talent that is Brian McKnight, you can never go wrong. But this album left me missing something. He uses the auto-tune, which has become too much of a stable in a genre of amazing, finely-tuned singers. He has always been albe to make great club ready tracks, but the new sounds are too juvenile for his mature nature. "Never Say Goodbye" & "Baby It's U" are typical first dance wedding songs (I danced to "Love of My Life" by the man himself) but they come off to generic for his song writing ability. The Highlights, and there are a good amount, are the single, "What I've Been Waiting For", "I Miss You", "Always Be My Baby" & "Another You". Even his Gospel track (a staple at the end of most all of McKnight's albums) is a good send off, as it's not as specific in religon, as it is secular. A long wait for real R&B, with All-4-One, Kevon Edmonds, and Mr. McKnight, but all of R&B is Evolving, as is the Man.

Love Is....

The Man, The Legend, The Soundtrack to so many intimate evenings has returned!! This is the "New" sound we've been waiting for. Get used to hearing "Never Say Goodbye" & "Another You" as the theme for many up coming weddings. After listening to "Another You" I had to drop what I was doing and call my wife and just tell her, "I Love You" this is hands down the best track on this collection!! It has that old Brian feel and takes you back to what love is supposed to be....ENJOY!!

Evolution Of A Man

Have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this disc. Purchased it approximately 10 min. after 12:00p.m.
Anyone questioning Brian's talent of bringing on some new style- ? -Here are '10 Reasons', -no (14) why you will be -saying "Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda" as they quickly dissappear. Many tracks are going to be warming up 'Backseats' this winter:) Brians vocals are above & beyond 99% of his peers, Peabo, BeBe, & Babyface come relatively close. His talent & varied musicality is pure Genius! Music IS the Universal language. Brian put in his heart & soul, wrapped it up, placed a ribbon around, & brings us all closer to being 'Back at One'. Great new Talk Show as well. SoulfullyYours'n'indy
