Ewan Dobson does it all - Techno, folk, slide, Irish, classical, flamenco!

Ewan Dobson appeared on the U.S. guitar scene in September 2009 with a third-place performance in the highly-competitive international finger-style guitar contest at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. That's where I discovered his artistry among the 40 competitors - when he performed, I heard the sound and beat I was looking for. Great driving bass line, and a terrific skill at staccato finger-picking, as he's demonstrated with contest wins all over Canada. And he never loses the tempo - even when he's ripping up and down the strings, each note is distinct and clear. He can compete with any flat-picker, too - I saw him using a flat pick and doing finger-style at the same time. Techno (Level 5 and Level 30), Irish traditional (a couple jigs), classical (Paganini), flamenco (Blood and Ice), slide (Motion Potion!) - he can play any style, and most of these tracks are his compositions. Whatever he's composing, I'm downloading.

Excellent Unique Fingerstyle Guitarist

Now this guy can play! Exceptional fingerstyle playing mixing metal - classical - dance - folk into an intense melodic musical experience. This guy just filled by January calender since now a have to learn the tab for these right after I get done with my Andy Mckee study. Great stuff here!!!

Something new.... yet somehow old.

To start off Ill talk about the stuff that makes this album great. First off, his skill and technique are amazing. And for anyone looking from some triple-A guitar playing, look no further. Second, his melody's are catchy and interesting. Sure some of them are similiar, but not to a point where it feels cheap or thrown together. In fact each of his pieces has the distinct sound of a muscisian putting is entire soul into it. This is truly what he loves to do, and it shows.

Now here comes the hard part. To be a respectable critic (which really aren't) I have to give some example of lacking. Some of the songs are somewhat repetetive, and can be grating after long listening sessions. But the pro's make up for this and then some.

In conclusion, if you want some mellow (yet upbeat) musical listening, and love the sound of acoustic guitar, buy this album.
