iTunes Review

The Exotic Sounds of Courtney Jaye is a heady topical cocktail made from pre-Beatles pop, retro-country and a dash of Hawaiian kitsch. Singer/songwriter Jaye is clearly having fun mixing and matching these ingredients, but beneath the album’s sometimes-campy surface are substantial tunes and genuine wit. Jaye leans towards the feisty stance of such ‘60s icons as Jackie DeShannon and Nancy Sinatra, especially on such tart-tongued numbers as “Don’t Tell a Girl” and “Tiger’s Eye.” She dives headlong into tiki-bar ambiance on “Queen of Sabotage” and invokes the shade of exotica maestro Martin Denny on the (mostly) instrumental “Maru Maru.” When she wants to, Jaye can whip up delectable Nashville-style tunes, as evidenced by “Box Wine” and the ultra-catchy “Sweet Ride.” Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell sits in for a duet on a bubbly cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Sometimes Always.” Swooning lap- steel guitars and island-accented percussion add to the playfully sultry mood of the tracks. Jaye’s wistful-to-stinging vocal style helps the whole concoction blend.

This record is totally amazing

Every single song, right on the money. Songs, vocals, playing, and production.
It's deep and mystical, catchy and whimsical, stays with you for a long time after listening.
Gotta have it. Pointing out the musical path for 2010.

This record is UNREAL.

I have been waiting 2 years for this record, ever since I heard the songs on her Myspace Page, Spring 2008.
All I can say is that she has really raised the bar with this record, practically inventing a new genre and unique sound that combines classic songwriting with a Vintage, Hawaiian, Motown, Country style of production. It's a sound that completely sets her part from the sea of other favorite female Alternative/Country voices. And her voice IS the best part of the record, there is no doubt about it.
I love every song I have heard so far, especially the Jesus and Mary Chain cover/duet with Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. A totally original take on the song that has this Tropical, Country, Stones-ish vibe, and their voices sound great together.
Other standout's are the funky Motown swagger of "Tiger's Eye", the Vintage 60's Hawaiian sound of "Maru Maru" and "Box Wine", which might possibly be the most classic Country drinking song written in recent memory.
This record is real, fresh and loooooong overdue. It is now time for the rest of the world to discover it.

It's Cold Outside - This Record Will Thaw You

Every song on this collection is a unique tropical gem - collect the whole set. Do it.
