iTunes Review

Phantogram updates old-school trip-hop on the aptly titled Eyelid Movies, their first full-length release. Beginning with the addictive opener, “Mouthful of Diamonds,” these dozen tunes ricochet wildly between upbeat and melodic, gauzy and psychedelic, and flat-out eerie as lush loops and fractured beats collide with shoegazer guitar lines. The duo of Joshua Carter (guitar, vocals) and Sarah Barthel (keyboards, vocals) also throw in countless strange surprises to keep things interesting and ultra atmospheric. Barthel’s breathy, seductive vocals perfectly capture the chill mood of “All Dried Up,” “10,000 Claps,” and the hypnotic “When I’m Small,” while Carter sings lead on heavier cuts like “Turn It Off” and “Running from the Cops,” the latter of which features a deliciously disorienting vocal effect. Phantogram’s experimental approach offers something for nearly any fan of electronic pop and similar, sample-based styles.

All over the place...in a good way.

This album can't be pinned down to one sound and can't easily be compared to anything else; yet, it manages to feel familiar. Just a great album from a really exciting group.

Textural, complicated, layered, dark-ish

It mixes experimental electronic treatments with woozy vocals and guitar, and nicely layers a lot of real and synthesized instruments. At times like Sneaker Pimps, at times like Union of Knives' Violence And Birdsong, and the song "As Far As I Can See" is like the best J Dilla track -- it's one of Eyelid Movies' standouts. Other standouts are Mouthful Of Diamonds, When I'm Small, Let Me Go -- these are hook-y and accessible for the casual listener. The rest of the album is creative and striking at times, a real achievement overall and an indication that the music world moves forward once in awhile.

Few 1st Albums are this Fantastic!

Weezers Blue Album and the Gorillaz first album. Those 2 are in my book as the best opening albums ever. I can now add Eyelid Movies to that list. What an incredible debut by these talented hipsters. (It's true they're total hipsters) but that's not the point.

Pop this album in while you're driving. IT'S AN EXPERIENCE!
