Album Review
Miniature Tigers recorded their first album in Phoenix, AZ, a town whose landlocked sprawl forced the musicians to create their own geography. Tell It to the Volcano conjured up images of tropical islands and communal campfires, using acoustic guitars and casual, breezy melodies to dream up a landscape that looked nothing like the band’s home. Fortress, the group’s second album, sketches a different picture. What was once casual is now complex; what was formerly indebted to 1960s pop now takes cues from 21st century groups like Animal Collective and Of Montreal. For starters, the guys have left the Southwest and relocated to Brooklyn, and they’ve boosted their acoustics with a newfound love for synthesizers and experimental arrangements. They’ve also reached out to bands like Neon Indian, who produced the leisurely leadoff single “Gold Skull,” and the Morning Benders, whose frontman, Christopher Chu, produced the rest. The result is a far more eccentric album than the band's debut, with blippy keyboards and amorphous song formats replacing the straightforward pop hooks of Tell It to the Volcano.
Customer Reviews
Swell sophomore release
The miniature tigers definately know how to create a good song. With Charlie Brand's writing and Chris Chu's production, you truly can't go wrong. I didn't think it could get better after the strong catchy first release, but I was quite wrong.
So glad for this to finally drop after dangling goldskull in my face for a month.

i bought it because there were areolas on the cover but it blew my mind. discovered a great new artist!
The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Miniature Tigers
Miniature Tigers saw an opportunity for repeat success with their ever-growing fan base due to the notoriety and popularity of their last effort. Personally, I wasn’t partial to Brand’s quirky lyrics and the slapstick pop of their debut album. Sure, the band had all the elements needed, but I still felt that there wasn’t much in the way of replay value to their sound. After listening to Fortress, I am happy to say my tone has changed a great deal. On “Mansion of Misery”, the front door to Fortress, Brand quickly assures the listener that papa’s got a Brand new bag, singing effortlessly, “Can’t drain the stuff that’s running all throughout me." It's perfectly clear that he has tapped into something special and what I presume to be just a preview of what’s to come. Other highlights include (but aren’t limited to): “Rock & Roll Mountain Troll”, with its knee-jerk beat taking you for a ride on horseback through the lyrical jungle Brand creates, fading seamlessly into his softly sung harmonies of “Dark Tower”. And, before you know it, you’re back in 1965 with the Red Bull-ignited quickstep of “Bullfighter Jacket”, singing, “I’m terrified to lose you, but more afraid to change.” “Lolita” is nothing short of studio perfection. It begins with the elegance of a piano played with infinite sustain, joined by faint tapping on the bass drum. Finally, with a single beat, instruments are eliminated and vocals carry the song, all leading up to that one bandstand moment when Miniature Tigers makes you feel like you’re part of history in the making. This experimental pop rock band has definitely taken their game to the next level. For those of you who think their best song is "Cannibal Queen", you really need to listen to this album. For those of you who think the “Gold Skull” single isn’t a great sign, don’t worry, it’s nothing like the rest. And, for those of you who didn’t like “Gold Skull”, you’re bound to love the others and later learn to love “Gold Skull”. Plain. And. Simple. With Fortress, the group has really fallen into a sound they should stick to, and one that will likely keep you glued, as well.
