iTunes Review

At the time of its release, Fables was considered a slight letdown from the band’s previous output and the band helped emphasize this point by sounding less than enthusiastic about their experiences with legendary folk-rock producer Joe Boyd. However, time has been extremely kind to this album and over the years it has become one of their strongest and most enduring ones. “Can’t Get There From Here” and “Driver 8” gave them modest hits, but it’s the delicate tensions of “Feeling Gravity’s Pull” and “Auctioneer” and the somber graces of “Green Grow the Rushes” and “Wendell Gee” that give this album its remarkable depth. This Deluxe Edition includes a generous 14 bonus cuts of demos cut back in Athens before they headed to England to have Boyd work his production magic. The spare quality of the demos gives the listener an insight into Boyd’s importance to these songs and the resulting album. The demos are charming, but the band’s identity isn’t much beyond that of a solid and likable garage band. With Boyd adding the extra textures, the band crafted a classic.

their best

I bought this album when I was in 8th grade in 1985. Its my favorite album of all time. This record opened the door to so much cool music for me - needs to be up there with Revolver, Marquee Moon, Village Green Preservation Society. No band has ever made another album like this one.

Southern Gothic Classic!

Like its two predecessors, Fables of the Reconstruction now gets the deluxe remastering and repackaging treatment for its 25th anniversary. And what a wonderful work of art it is! R.E.M. classics such as Driver 8 sit alongside the sweet melancholy of Green Grow The Rushes and Wendell Gee. The record has been described as "Southern Gothic," which is not inaccurate, with all its obscure allusions to southern lore and landscapes. But it is also a personal vision, where Stipe's abstract, subjective view is expressed beautifully by Buck and Mills' colorful, compelling music. And let's not forget the great Bill Berry, whose drumming is tasteful throughout. The extra tracks (or bonus CD) of early demos from Athens, GA, before the band flew out to England to record the LP with legendary producer Joe Boyd, are themselves worth the purchase. At long last, the mystery track "When I Was Young," listed in the original packaging but left off the album, is revealed (though now strangely entitled Throw Those Trolls Away; a bit of classic R.E.M. subterfuge, perhaps?). It is remarkable to note how well-developed the songs were even at the demo stage. And it's particularly interesting to hear Can't Get There From Here without the horns and Feeling Gravitys Pull sans strings. Only Maps And Legends suffers here: It benefits greatly on the final album by editing some of Mills' extraneous harmony vocals. Though not quite a true masterpiece to warrant five stars, Fables deserves four-and-a-half as a modern classic of its kind. If only Apple's rating software would allow half-stars in their reviews...

A Classic improved on!

I have listened to this album since 85' and have never gotten tired of it - I go back to it and it takes me places I've been in my past and always makes me smile. I am a huge REM fan and have been since my older brother gave me this album. It changed my life and from that moment on I have listened to REM more than any other artist to date. They have only gotten better, but I truly believe this is one of their finest albums, but just ask me that tomorrow and I'll say New Adventures in Hi-Fi. The new mix and back to back of the same song is great, hearing slight differences and nuances is very cool. I can't say enough about this album and am so glad they re-released it. I've had it on all day long and sure I will tomorrow - that's life and how to live it, just ask Old Man Kensey.

Biography

Formed: 1980 in Athens, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
