All their work is amazing, but this album is my favorite

     

Howdy. I can't say enough of how profound of a band I think these guys are. They have brought the voice of the big band to a new level - a hard thing to do in today's day and age where the popularity of the big band has waned, giving not much financial support to new voices in big band writing. Most big bands today are carbon copies of the greats of yesterday - and that's what sells. While Maria Shneider, Roy Hargrove and, the giant, Wynton Marsalis - whom I think writes his most brilliant stuff by a long shot for large ensembles - while all of these guys (and gals) are out there plugging away, the Fat Cat Big Band kicks out some of the most inspiring and original and invigorating big band music I've ever heard. It's like if Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus and Bach's Fugue writing and Wagner's extended writing and Thad Jones soul and Carla Bley's melancholy and beauty all found itself in one band, with the raw abandon of the best rock records...
anyway, as you can tell, I like this band. Do yourself a favor and pick it up. Just buy all their records. Or savor each one and buy them slow... YES! Anyway you consume their music, you will be happy. Enjoy!
