Album Review

Matt Redman's worship records have always walked the knife's edge between the kind of finessed restraint and elegance imposed by a recording studio and the dynamics dictated by the communal nature of the songs themselves. Until now that is. Facedown is a collection of all new material, recorded live. Redman is a revolutionary in the praise & worship movement. His unrelenting, single-pointed focus on the transformational aspects of praise & worship in private prayer and communal celebration is stubborn, it is razor-sharp, and it is edgy. On this set, Redman comes off with as much subtlety as the Dave Matthews Band and as much inspiration as Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, but subtlety is not the point. Radical, over the top, action-packed celebration is. Thankfully, his dynamic and musical presence on this record is something akin to that band's concert persona as well. He doesn't whip people into a frenzy, but his songs do. This is most notable on the anthemic opener, "Praise Awaits You," the shimmering "Nothing But the Blood," the transcendent manifesto of the title track, and the rocker "Mission's Flame." The reason they do is because they carry within them the grain of God personally experienced, not preached. It is the evidence of that truth shared as burden and blessing by a community, which embraces in song the paradox of trying to live in the absolute "now" toward a future as yet unrevealed. And for those cynics who believe worship music lacks poetry for all its conviction, one should give a cursory glance to Redman's lyrics. His songs highlight with both simplicity and complexity the human heart's transformational desire for the kingdom of his God to be made manifest on earth. And the guy can write a rock & roll song to boot. Facedown is a shining and innovative take on modern worship music to be sure, but it is also a fine example of a live album by a singer/songwriter of distinction.

An album like no other

If you are a Christian, this album will minister unto you like no other. Music has a higher purpose than just entertainment. Music has the purpose of worship. If you want to know what music with a higher purpose sounds like, if you want evidence God has the best music on planet earth, buy this album! Psalm 98:4 says to “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music”…and that’s just what this album does. Here on his Facedown album, Matt Redman explodes with an awesome and stunning power burst of worship that begins with "Praise Awaits You" and never stops. It is an album that flat out rocks through and through—unmatched in passion and power and purpose. With one overriding and awesome passionately powerful purpose—the purpose to worship—Matt Redman takes the listener spiritually/musically on a journey through the open doorway in heaven and because of a "Gifted Response", cleansed by "Nothing but the Blood", the listener can enter through the gates of heaven and come before the very throne of God and become part of a forever singing and “Dancing Generation” joining in worship with all creation and the angels of Revelation 5 singing "Worthy, You Are Worthy" O Lamb of God who was slain! "Raise a Voice", worthy is the Lamb who was slain! Hallelujah! "Lead Us Up the Mountain" O Lord to the place where you dwell. Bring us out of the darkness, for "Seeing You" in your "Pure Light" I cannot do ''If I Have Not Love". For those that take the musical/spiritual journey on this album, you'll find yourself entering the courts of the King falling "Facedown" in worship before the Almighty, "Breathing the Breath" given to us by our Creator, using that breath to worship Him, and catching on fire forever in the "Mission's Flame". Yes, every song on this album should be on everyone’s ipod—Jesus should be the praise of every tongue and the joy of every heart! Amen! This unprecedented album gains access into the courts of heaven with worship like you've never heard it! As a prodigy who became a worship leader at the age of 15 and who hasn't stopped worshipping since, as a powerful force in the British and American worship scene spawning whole movements and protégés such as Chris Tomlin and Tim Hughes, is there a songwriter on the music scene today who is more prolific than Matt Redman? I think not. Is there another singer/songwriter upon the face of the earth more anointed or talented to lead worship than Matt Redman? Facedown sets the standard for modern worship. I invite you to do yourself a favor and BUY THIS ALBUM and seek entranceway into the courts of the King upon Zion, the holy mountain of the LORD (Psalm 2:6) and you will find yourself singing till the break of the day, worshipping God forever more! To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, forever and ever! Amen! I invite one and all to be cleansed with “Nothing but the Blood” and come and draw close to Jesus in worship (this album is a vehicle by which you can do that) for the end times are here and only in Him will you find refuge from what is coming over the earth! Make the way to Zion while you still can! Time is short! JESUS IS COMING! BUY THIS ALBUM AND WORSHIP THE KING!

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The light and passionate sounds of Matt Redman are even more endearing when you know that he writes his own material, something that few pop artists really do. Taking the CCM market by surprise with The Friendship & the Fear in 1998, he revealed himself to be a good singer as well as a thought-provoking songwriter. The next year he released The Father's Song, another successful blend of praise & worship with contemporary pop. But after that he took a few years to mull over his material, eventually...
