"Faded Blues" -- A lost treasure in need of rediscovery
“Faded Blues” by David Mullen not only ranks among one of the greatest Christian albums of all time, it merits such lofty accolades in the modern blues collective. There are numerous attempts to bridge the gap between Rock and the Blues, yet none surpass the quality of this work. Few works of any category equal his transparent honesty and intensity. The title song, “Faded Blues” coupled with the subsequent track, “Water Into Wine”, apparently serve as personal narratives of the singer’s past, while such tracks as “Under The Same Sun” and “Alone” reveal the artist’s personal cosmogony. “Libby” fulfills the role of the unusual love song requisite of most popular albums of the 1990’s. Mullen deviates somewhat from the Blues stereotype in that he does not expressly provide a song addressed to a lost love. He does, however, speak of loss and, in his view, the process of recovery. This masterful synthesis is an essential for all fans for this genre.
A True Treasure
I bought this CD for a dollar (at the store by the same name) and only because a friend of mine played guitar on the album. I knew the guitar work would be awesome, but what a surprize! Mullen's vocals are soulful and unique, reaching powerful heights and touching the quiet depths of your spirit. The musical range is amazing- U2, Don Henley, Procol Harum, James Brown are all here along with many others. The production and sequencing of the tracks takes you on an emotional journey and leaves you wanting to listen again and again. I feel as if I stole something getting this spiritual rock masterpiece for a dollar, but I highly recommend you download it guilt free. It's a centerpiece of my music collection.
