Faith is one of the ‘80’s most durable pop albums and it made George Michael a solo star after his years with Wham! If an album can be said to define an era, Faith is a possible contender. This deluxe version of the album includes the original album, sounding remarkable and pristine, along with nine bonus cuts and seven videos. Tracks such as “Faith,” “Father Figure” and “I Want Your Sex” deserve to be seen as much as heard and the clean and censored versions of the latter tune’s videos make for an insight into the cultural changes always at work. The Shep Pettibone remix of “Hard Day,” instrumental tracks of “Faith” and “Kissing a Fool,” and the live takes of Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)” and Wonder’s “Love’s In Need Of Love Today” bring back the sound of the ‘80s in perfect detail, with soft reverb and glossy keyboards meeting up with the dense rhythmic kick of the album.

A Pop Classic Finally Gets the Treatment it Deserves

This review is more about this version of Faith as it pertains to the remastering as I doubt there are many reading this who are not already quite familiar with this album. With that said, my personal opinion is that Faith is a pop classic; its not in the realm of say a Rumors, Hotel California or Joshua Tree....but its more than a 1980's time capsule. Instead it stands as an example of what an artist is capable of when he takes all his talent-songwriting, arrangement and ablility to convey emotion-throws himself into his work and pushes himself creatively to the brink. There is a genuine, uncensored quality to every track on this album-as Michael bares his soul with tracks like One More Try and Kissing a Fool. And to give him credit....Michael was ahead of his time; his particular brand of in your face expression of sexuality through music that was controversial at the time now seems quaint given what is blaring out of Top 40 radio these days. In the end, while the clearly 1980's colorings of this album are not for everyone, it is still an incredibly well rounded and masterfully crafted record-that we can now listen to as the artist intended.

I cannot tell you how many times over the last 5 years I have mentioned to someone why Faith had not yet been remastered. I watched classic album after classic album get the treatment and had the joy of experiencing those seemingly "for the first time".....but I was still listening to a nearly 20 year old "slap the original mix on a CD" version of Faith. It didn't make much sense. In retrospect, it was probably for the best; I have several albums in my collection that were remastered in the late 1990's and early 2000's that, when stacked up against more recent remasters done in the last 5 years CLEARLY need to be re-done. And while you could complile remastered versions of a great many the songs on this record via the greatest hits collection, not only there were gaps but I felt the 2006 remasters gave a little bit to be desired.

However now, with this release, you can hear the album in all its glory. The drums pop out of the back of the mix, the bass pulses through the tracks propelling them forward....and the vocals are clear, crisp and defined. I am noticing that there a number of reviews already posted of this album that cast this release in the negative light stating they don't like the mix and/or that the vinyl version is better. Music and music QUALITY is a matter of taste and I won't knock those who prefer something other than the crystal clear digital experience. However, if you are like me and prefer the clarity, balance and overall performance of a good digital remaster-then this release is for you. Add to that fact a good number of nice acoustic, remix and B-side tracks and its well worth the price.

Masterful Pop-Soul Fusion

Along with Michael Jackson's "Thriller" , Prince's "Purple Rain", and possibly Madonna's debut, "Faith" is the perfect fusion of Pop-Soul (with some funk, rock and rockabilly thrown in the mix). Every song is great and the deluxe version adds terrific remixes and videos. I was absolutley blown away the first time I heard the album (yes, I bought the vinyl version over 25 years ago) and I am still thoroughly impressed with George Michael's masterful musical craftsmanship on "Faith". The musical diversity is impressive. Today's male pop and R&B stars could really learn a lot from this recording. This is an All-time classic in my book.

A rare classic

There's so few albums which are truly great from start to finish. My collection is littered with albums with two or three great tracks, a couple good ones and the rest, filler. Every here and there is an album you can listen to from start to finish and it's like each song is better than the one which preceded it. Faith is one such album. Not long ago this album jumped out of my record collection, and I was amazed. The progression of styles from start to finish is a wonder, and not one song was more deserving of the massive radio airplay it received than another. If memory serves, of its 10 tracks, only the last one, "A Last Request" did not show up on the radio or MTV. One of the defining albums of my generation, a true classic.
