Album Review
Two of Falconer's three members are alumni of Swedish black/Viking metal outfit Mithotyn, but Falconer is a lot more than merely Mithotyn Mark 2. The self-titled debut boasts a more pronounced power metal slant and displaces the mother-band's dark Nordicisms in favor of touches of Celtic folk. At times this makes Falconer sound like Jethro Tull gone heavy metal, but when they let rip, their compact, thunderous attack, strong melodic sense, sense of drama, and Matthias Blad's distinctive vocals (pitched lower than you'd expect for a work in this genre) are a force of nature. Lyrically Falconer is about what you'd expect from an album which has a horseback rider straight out of Tolkien on its sleeve: dungeons and dragons and sword and sorcery. But then you don't listen to Falconer for their lyrics. When the Iron Maiden-gone-bonkers majesty of "Heresy in Disguise," "Mindtraveller," and "Entering Eternity" kicks in, Falconer can sound better than just about anyone else in their weight category.

Folk metal!? Trust me, it's good.
If you like power/progressive metal such as iron maiden and blind guardian, or if you love a good fantasy novel, Falconer will satisfy. They keep it relatively simple in their debut album, but the energizing guitar riffs coupled with Matthias Blad's crystal clear voice make this album a joy for metalheads that actually like to understand what the vocalist is singing. Highly recommended.

When I was debating buying this album, I was kind of wary about Mathias Blad's low voice. I wasn't sure it would capture the energy that most good, and usually high-voiced metal singers achieve. After buying it and listening to it, though, I like it. His vocals sound different, but really awesome-much better than that growling nonsense that some metal bands have. Memorable guitar riffs, cool lyrical themes. Good buy.
Innovative, in a non-innovative way.
So Falconer is a power metal band, right? Well, pretty much. It's really a combination of many different things. The guitar and drums are very Gothenburg sounding, but the vocals aren't. And the vocals aren't your typical power metal vocals either, which kind of threw me off at first, because I listen to so much power metal. They're sung usually a little low, but very melodic. And there's a bit of a folk influence, but aside from "A Quest For the Crown", it's not very obvious. Mostly, the folk melodies are played on the guitar rather than on folk instruments, so that also threw me off a bit. Once I got used to it, however, i found it to be really great. Wings of Serenity is completely epic and awesome too.
