Album Review

Stalwart bluegrass godfather Del McCoury released Family Circle (no, it's not a progressive bluegrass song cycle about the popular American women's magazine of the same name) six months after unleashing a 50-track career retrospective (with newly recorded songs, no less). His first collection of non-gospel material since 2005, Family Circle featured new material penned by the likes of Ronnie Bowman, Jim Lauderdale, Mark Knopfler, Billy Smith, and Shawn Camp played to perfection by Del, sons Rob and Ronnie, fiddler Jason Carter, and bass player Alan Bartram. Like all McCoury releases, Family Circle sounds like the work of a band in its prime (Del was 70 at the time of recording), and while it may follow the bluegrass template to the letter, it's a note worth reading, studying, and ultimately passing along to others.

Look, Del is Bluegrass!

Look, Del = Bluegrass. Del has paid all of the dues. His voice and I mean that individually and in the larger sense is the bluest. He is retro and avant garde. Del and the Boys are gospel and secular. Del's Sirius/XM weekly program is a history and a projection forward--the weekly hour sorta puts me in mind of the old Johnny Cash television show which somehow managed to pay homage to the pioneers (alltime classic moment Cash and Louis Armstrong on Jimmy Rodgers Blue Yodel No. 9)and show the way to the future with guests like Dylan. The two greatest bluegrass performances from the modern era, on You Tube, are Del et al. at the Ryman performing Get Down on Your Knees and Pray, and Richard Thompson's Vincent Black Lighting 1952. The new release, perfection! Del's voice--pure chills, baby!

Awesome.......

Del and the boys did it again!!! love it!
