Classic Hip Hop!!!!!

Grows on you... rip dilla!

First off, this album was not released in 2006. It is actually a re-release and the original was a demo of sorts that hit the underground in 1997. this is the original slum village line up found only on this album and "Vol. 2" from 2000. It consisted of T3 who is still part of the group now, Baatin who left in 04, and of course the one and only Jay Dee aka J Dilla who left in 02. The original supposedly has only 10 songs, which i cannot confirm because ive never got my hands on a copy, but this album is soooo sick! Dilla's beats are nothing like you've ever heard before. They are grimy yet smooth and use really crunchy drums. Also, it was recorded in a very unusual style: the rapping was done with only a hi hat and dilla added the beats later. Listening to it you can see how that was done. T3 and Baatin are not too lyrical and actually freestyle most of their sh*t, but the beats really come through. It flows smoothly and comprehensively and oddly enough, the mc's compliment the beats almost perfectly the way their verses are not long and are low quality, very subtle. This album is perfect to just kick back to and not really think, just let the vibes of dilla take you away. Perfect example of that underground boom bap, in a special slum village kinda way.

'97-'98 to be safe. So they cut this in 96(?!?) and eleven years later it still knocks harder and rides smoother than most stuff coming out today. This CHANGED hip hop music and raised the bar in a different way. While whats "HOT" is now based on how many records were SOLD, this redefined whats "BANGIN".
