Album Review

As a band Asia were able to do what few from the prog rock era were able to do: combine streamlined pop hooks into very sophisticated songs that included varying instrumental passages where individual members could stretch a bit. Their chart success — especially early on — was formidable. Fantasia: Live in Tokyo is an anniversary concert performed with all the original members: Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, Steve Howe and John Wetton. Eagle Rock has issued the entire concert, on both on a double-CD as well as DVD. There are 18 cuts here, including the hits as well as tracks by the members' other bands such as "Roundabout" by Yes (that contains guitarist Howe) Downes' "Video Killed the Radio Star" from his stint with the Buggles, and Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," (which was recorded by Emerson, Lake & Palmer). The bookends for this rather indulgent but exciting live show are "Time Again," and, of course, "Heat of the Moment," a live version that 25 years later seems to top the original! For Asia fans, this is a rather indispensable document.

The Original Band is Back

I don't know what these other reviewers are smoking, but this is a great album. The band sounds strong and the addition of material from each member's past is fun. I can't wait for the new album in April. If you love the original Asia you will really enjoy this collection of songs...ride easy guys :0)

Why is this CD listed twice?

iTunes has this listed twice for $14 & $9. The songs are the same but the name of intersection blues is changed. The name is really The Clapp. Also the other Cd list a drum solo but the time of The Heat Goes On is the same. Maybe they will see my review and fix the problem.

Fantasia Live in Tokyo

A must for Asia fans. Wetton's voice is still good though slightly different than it was on some of his other live albums. The King Crimson cover is amazing!

Biography

Formed: January, 1981

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

When they appeared in the early '80s, Asia seemed to be a holdover from the '70s, when supergroups and self-important progressive rockers reigned supreme. Featuring members of such seminal art rock bands as King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Carl Palmer), and Yes (Steve Howe), as well as Geoff Downes from the Buggles, Asia did feature stretches of indulgent instrumentals on their records. However, they also could be surprisingly poppy, and that is what brought them to the top...
