iTunes Review
On his debut full-length, El-P birthed a creature that is part man, part machine, and all beast. The title track captures some of the spare thrills that Schoolly D and Code Money made famous. On “Deep Space 9mm,” El-P says what’s really on his mind. Fantastic Damages delivers on the title; the album rumbles in on four chrome pins, breaks the IKEA bookshelf, kicks a hole in the speaker, and then leaves a blood and oil slick in your driveway.

Fan Dam
Perfection of sound organization, period. If you appreciate music in any way, buy this overlooked masterpiece. This album will seep into your psyche and feed your senses;like a fine wine, El-P's Fantastic Damage only gets better with time, highly recommended would be a dramatic understatement. Buy it now.
By far El-P's crowning achievement.
Fantastic Damage is the best thing that El-P has ever touched. Yes, it is better than Funcrusher Plus (though only by a slim margin in this reviewer's opinion). El-P makes rap music on a professional level, layering music and creating compositions that are simply non-existent in the greater hip-hop community. Part hip-hop, part rock and part raging machine, El-P's beats are alive in a way that music hasn't seen since the heyday of great rock bands in the 1960s and 70s. Moving on from the beats (which are discussed enough in other reviews), it is time to call attention to El-P's proficiency as both an MC and as a songwriter. El-P manages to craft a concept album not only in terms of production but also in terms of lyrical integrity. By maintaining control over every aspect of the tracks on this album (aside from a few guest spots from Def Jux heavyweights like Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif to name a few), El-P hasn't created a hot sixteen track hip-hop record, he's created a complete package that begs to be listened to in one sitting with no interruptions. With deft wordwork he seals all of these songs together ranging from randomly psychotic exultations to sobering examinations of social ills from the tragedy of war (yes, that's a Company Flow reference) to the dangers of authoritarianism to the personal travails of children experiencing domestic abuse. Of course, it takes a few listens for some of these points to emerge, but that's the point. This is an album that ages like wine. I first downloaded it with only a passing interest in El-P as an individual artist (spurred by a love of Funcrusher Plus and his appearance on Del the Funkee Homosapien's "Offspring"), then bought the album a few days later, then went back and bought the album as a perfect candidate for my very small vinyl collection. It. Is. *That*. Good.
An album for our times
Sometimes music just speaks for the generation from which it came, and I think that "Fan Dam" does just that. It speaks for the impoverished, overlooked, jaded masses. This album is a dark, brooding apocalyptic masterpiece.
