iTunes Review

Setting Sun is essentially the output of producer-multi-instrumentalist Gary Leavitt, who works on and off with his partner Erica Quitzow (of Quitzow) to make music that takes as many left turns as can still accommodate Leavitt’s natural accessibility. Described as “Brit-Pop,” psychedelic, techno-folk and many other odd taglines, Setting Sun do mix and match with a witty abandon. “Driving” is like a shuffling rockabilly number where the early new-wave movement shows up in a variety of swoops and swills. “Make You Feel” is the sound of an acoustic folk song being hijacked by brilliantly varied instrumentation and a sweet sway that accidentally snags a bit from Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page.” “The Tree” sounds like the Rolling Stones’ “Torn and Frayed” diced up with Pink Floyd. “Don’t Grow Up” adds Quitzow’s cello to the ensemble vocals that sound like a band of mad monks finding their way into the sunshine. “I Love Mellotrons” is a drums and acoustic guitar-based instrumental that finally pays tribute to that most ‘70s of keyboards and ends with a bit of violin.

Jack Johnson-esque

The singer reminds me a bit of Jack Johnson, in a good way. Its very soothing and kind of a chill-in-the-car-on-the-way-to-a-friends type of music genre. Its got the perfect blend of a mellow voice with a hint of upbeat tempo to keep you interested. Its not my go to type of music, but it certainly deserves a listening to. :)

A little off the wall...

I never heard of this group before... frankly, I just stumbled upon it. It was interesting enough through the samples, so I bought it, just to expose myself to this mellow-electrona kind of alternative genre. Some of it was a little off the wall, almost pushing my limits of unconventional too far. The song "One Time Around" is about REINCARNATION, of all topics. I just can't find myself to listen to the whole song through. The rest was suprisingly great.
The instumentation is well collaborated and an earful, using mainly synthesizers.
The vocals consist of only the lead and harmonizing female backups, and it is quite enjoyable; the lyrics were seemingly deep and though out well. However, the lyrics are somewhat disjointed through a couple of songs. Hoping to hear perfection throughout, it was kind of a dissapointment, but nonetheless enjoyable.

worth the listen.
