Album Review

The opening title track of Fantasy Land is slow, murky, electronic pop, with a subdued vocal — a disillusioned lullaby that may unintentionally lure some listeners to sleep. But hang in there, listeners: The album picks up the pace on the remaining 11 tracks. Hank Harris' vocals recall Steve Stills, and his lively, horn-embellished songs are reminiscent of mid-70s Boz Scaggs. Best tracks include "I and I" with intense sax work by Sugar D (one of many top-flight musicians featured on the album), and the satirical "15 Minutes" and "Genuine Artificial." Harris has a flair for observant and humorous lyrics that touch on contemporary topics. His more upbeat songs make up for the occasional slow moments that mar an otherwise enjoyable album.

Forever

Rarely is my favorite song on an album a slower one. That is, until FantasyLand landed in my stereo. My favorite song off this album is Forever. It's deep and cutting with that stuck-in-your head quality that doesn't come around often with an actually sophisticated tune. Nevermind the lyrics making you think, the melodramatic tone and easy harmony of this is just upbeat enough to pull you in and make you stay.
