Album Review

The first project Mike Patton worked on after the April 1998 breakup of Faith No More was the all-star Fantomas. Heavy metal fans everywhere salivated at the lineup of Patton on vocals, the Melvins' Buzz Osborne on guitar, ex-Slayer Dave Lombardo on drums, and Mr. Bungle's Trevor Dunn on bass. But as longtime fans have come to learn long ago, always expect the unexpected with Patton-related projects. The band's self-titled debut (the first for Patton's record label, Ipecac) is far from your conventional rock; composed and produced entirely by the singer, the songs serve as a soundtrack to a comic book's story line. At nearly 43-minutes in length, Fantomas is comprised of 30 chronologically numbered "pages"' instead of songs. While it's an unconventional album, it's also a completely original one, especially when compared to the blah and predictable alt-rock of the late '90s. Patton uses his voice as an instrument with often amazing results (singing nonsensical syllables instead of words); few singers have the talent or know-how to pull off such highlights as "Page 1," "Page 19," "Page 21," and "Page 29." If you're expecting an album comparable to either Faith No More or Mr. Bungle, you may be confused and disappointed. But if you're looking for something completely original and cutting edge, Fantomas is highly recommended.

One of my very favorite albums

I remember hearing this for the first time, just being shell shocked out of my skull. Knowing very well I liked it, but just didnt know how to interpret it just yet. One thing was for sure though; I had never heard or even anticapated anything like this. Years later and I know every amazing moment of it, memorized it to a tee and still get chills. From pages 1-30, Mike Patton has created the end of how an open minded listener of heavy metal, or hardcore hears it altogether. Writing and Directing three very talented musicians into a masterpiece that's intensely shocking as it is maniacally original. Utilizing his vocal powers into what sounds like another instrument instead of a voice. What unfolds is beyond description and beyond what many, many people could never fully grasp. Having being too used to music that all sticks by the same formula and same sound year after year. But if youre open minded enough to handle this album. I suggest you do so immediately, and who knows what youll get into after it. Enjoy.

Only The Hardcore

This is the SUPER of supergroups, Patton(FNM, Bungle, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom) , Lombardo(Slayer) , Osborne(Melvins) ,Dunn(Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3). Now that's skill and power! This album is crazy, and all over the place. But that's what's great about it. If you can't handle erratic and unpredictable then this may not be for you. Director's Cut is more acessable but this is a great start for a fan of any of the above mentioned.

The REAL new metal

When Mike Patton was first interviewed about this album he told interviewers and fans that the whole album was written, not improvised. That makes perfect sense now, but when it was first released it was a revelation. Every song is a tour de force of heaviness. The only reason I took off a star is the album does not flow all that great. At 30 songs they start to mess together. This is the perfect album to purchase on iTunes because there are no lyrics that you need liner notes for and you can rock out to all the various great orchestrated songs on random. I agree that "Director's Cut" is a must have also.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

So named in honor of the anti-hero of a series of legendary French crime novels, Fantômas was formed by singer Mike Patton in the wake of the breakup of his previous band, Faith No More. After cutting a rough demo in early 1998, Patton recruited Melvins guitarist Buzz Osborne, Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn, and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo to flesh out the recording. The group then played their debut show in San Francisco in mid-June of that year, as the group's record debut was a cacophonous cover...
