iTunes Review

In the ‘80s, Dinosaur Jr. became synonymous with the type of roaring, distorted rock that helped pioneer the alternative movement. J Mascis was the mastermind behind the Massachusetts power trio and the gifted guitarist/singer/songwriter with a detached drawl ended up parting ways with the other members … only to reunite in 2005. Farm, Dinosaur Jr.’s ninth studio album — and second consecutive offering featuring the original lineup — was produced and written exclusively by Mascis, with the exception of two tracks penned by bassist Lou Barlow ("Your Weather" and "Imagination Blind"). From the boisterous opener (“Pieces”), it’s clear we’re hearing a rejuvenated DJ in all of its noise-pop glory. The one-two punch of “Over It” and “Friends” is powerful, while “Said the People” and “See You” temporarily slow the pace — the latter being the album’s most stripped-down, pop-y number. Farm often conveys sentient sentiments (that everyone is interconnected) and “We want to leave behind what can’t be held” from closing track, “Imagination Blind,” could double as the seminal band’s mantra.

Phenomenal

You're Living All Over Me changed my life and my friends lives. Seeing the band at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, 1987... well, damn the memories are so vivid it feels like yesterday. Dino Jr. tapped into a rage and melancholy and rock and roll like nothing for me. Since that time I have bought everything from Dinosaur Jr. but have been stunned by the utterly wise wicked wonderful jams of the last two records. Farm is phenomenal. The only frisbee IMO is Imagination Blind. But that's quibbling with a sonic force that clears your mind, rocks your soul, and moves you to a kinder place... where Mascis's guitar is the rarified air, even if your ears bleed. Let It Bleed.

Sounds Awesome

This album is definately one to get you moving. This kind of music is missing from today's rock scene, washed away with all that nu metal..Yuggh. A lot of good songs on here. Too many to name. It's quite a lengthy album too. One thing I sometimes notice about songs that are 6,7 or even 8 minutes long or longer, is that ideas tend to get lost, and you're left thinking....." I think they could've cut a few minutes off of this song." That's not the case here, the three they have just keep you rocking all the way through. I'll be listening to this for a while.

if you actually buy this at a store...

The actual physical CD contains 4 songs not on the download. It is limited. Support your local record store this time.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple...
