iTunes Review

Fate is the refined, purified amalgamation of the creative output from Dr. Dog over the last several years, carefully filtering and distilling the spirits of pop music from decades past and present into a breezy, seemingly effortless affair. There’s an organic warmth to these songs, along with a wealth of confidence that belies their “aw-shucks-we-barely-know-how-to-make-records” vibe of records past. When a band shifts so easily from shambling pop (“The Breeze”) to grimy blues ballads (“The Ark” and “The Beach”) and Philly-soul piano rock (“Hang on”), you realize all those earlier glances back to the days of pop yore worked towards Dr. Dog looking straight ahead to the future. One could surmise, from the nostalgic feel of the record and its themes of trains and days gone by, that the band is celebrating moving on.  Jewels like “The Old Days” and “Uncovering the Old,” with their orchestrated strings, glossy organs, and descending piano melodies, are perfect soundtrack tunes to the band’s time-travel haze. The last song, “My Friend,” even wraps things up with cameos from each of the previous songs, their snippets neatly hooked together like boxcars, rattling off into the sunset. Perhaps a hugely symbolic outing, Fate also delivers real, simple pleasures.

Customer Reviews

Way to make Philly proud!

This album is ridiculous... this is what people should, and will be talking about... These guys have more talent, song-writing chops than just about anyone out there now... Fans of the Band, the Beach Boys and the Beatles -- here's your saviour! Pass these guys along to all your friends!

Genius

I'm an old fart who had never heard of these guys before running across Fate in the new releases on iTunes. Saw "cross between Beatles and Beach Boys" in a review, checked out a song sample, then another, then another, etc - downloaded the album since it was such a great deal - and have been repeatedly listening to it for days. Pure genius, the songs all sound familiar & comfortable yet strikingly original. Best band of the century so far let alone of '08, IMO. Every song is pure genius, the video is pretty cool, the included digital book has artwork that fits the album ( I assume the same that comes in the cd?). Dr Dog is my new favorite band; I'll be checking out the rest of their catalog.

best dr dog album

now if you liked easy beat and we all belong, this album perfects that style and raises the bar in dr dog's ever strengthening music.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Philadelphia-based Dr. Dog are part of a long tradition of D.I.Y. pop oddballs who blend unapologetic '60s pop worship with lo-fi recording techniques and an apparent disregard for current trends. The group began as a part-time offshoot of the more traditional indie rock act Raccoon. Over the course of several years, guitarist Toby Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken found enough free time to record the casual, sprawling 35-track set The Psychedelic Swamp in a basement rehearsal space, finally...
