iTunes Review
Chess Records paired Waters with a cadre of Chicago psychedelic rockers in 1968 to make Electric Mud, an album he detested. The next year the label offered him a happier pairing, with youngbloods who'd apprenticed playing his music, for Fathers and Sons. The core band members were harp slinger Paul Butterfield and guitarist Michael Bloomfield, who'd often jammed with Waters on Windy City stages, plus Stax Records house bassist Duck Dunn, and ringers Sam Lay and Waters' pianist Otis Spann. The result is a marvelous return to old-school form, with Waters' elemental voice and crying slide guitar leading the charge through a stack of his early hits, including "Blow Wind Blow," "I'm Ready," and "Long Distance Call." The 14 studio performances, with four previously unreleased songs for the expanded version, are top-notch, but fireworks ignite on the six live numbers from the concert that completed their four days of recording.
Customer Reviews
One of the Best - Ever!
Fathers & Sons is one of those rare confluences of talent, past and present, which give you all you need to know about a particular genre. In this case, it's the blues and the album, especially the "live" 1969 Chicago concert portion, will grab you and force you to play it again and again! My favorite tracks are the "Got My Mojo Working 1-2" - they fire up in overdrive and never back down. Buy this album and cherish it.
Muddy and Butterfield
This is a killer little known album....great for harp players! Paul Butterfield and Muddy Waters...it doesn't get any better....reminds me of Water's work with James Cotton on "Hard Again".....Highly reccomended!
Yes.
This a lovely pairing of the core of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band with Muddy Waters and Otis Spann. Butterfield's harp is particularly hot on "Walkin' Through the Park," but best of all are Muddy's vocals and slide guitar on "Long Distance Call."
"Another mule..." It's so true.
