iTunes Review

Somali-Canadian rapper K’naan mixes star power — Damian Marley, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Mos Def, and Maroon 5 vocalist Adam Levine are some of Troubadour’s guests — and a variety of African elements on this 2009 release. Kicking off with an Ethiopian horn sample, the mesmerizing “America” finds K’naan rapping both in his native tongue and in English over looped guitar. “Somalia” features a lovely melody performed by a chorus and strings that contrasts nicely with the rapper’s edgy tones and words. K’naan frequently refers to Somalia’s harsh realities, and on “T.I.A.” (which stands for “This is Africa”), he one-ups U.S. hiphop artists by offering to show them what real violence looks like: “I’ll take rappers on a field trip any day/They never been opposite real clip anyway.” The high-energy “I Come Prepared” nods to Jamaican Dancehall, especially when Marley is on the mic. The album was partially recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica and put simply, Troubadour impresses.

Customer Reviews

K'naan is amazing....Period

I've waited awhile for this album and it doesn't disappoint.

T.I.A.- Good intro talking about Africa..."Holidays quickly turn into hell days."
ABC's- K'naan talks about how education is learned on the street.
Dreamer- Favorite quote..."You gotta be like Bush and take preemptive strikes"
I Come Prepared- His flow straight kills...and Damian's verse completes the song.
Bang Bang- This song is mediocre, but it does have a catchy chorus that Adam Levine sings very well.
If Rap Gets Jealous- Being a Metallica fan this is a personal favorite...Kirk SHREDS
Wavin' Flag- I was at Tribute to a Legend, a concert celebrating Bob Marley, and K'naan played this song. It's an amazing one. Take a listen.
Somalia- One of my favorites on the album. This song was prerealised and I'm glad he put it on the album.
America-Listen to these lyrics.
Fatima- Talking about love and his dreams "beyond our border"
Fire In Freetown- Slow, melodic tune. It's a chiller.
Take a Minute-One of the strongest songs on the album.
15 Minutes Away-I found this song pretty repetitive....
People Like Me-Lyrical masterpiece.....Best song on the album, hands down.
Does It Really Matter- Completely dissing mainstream music and the auto-tune...haha I'm a fan.

After a few listens I found my new favorite album.

Real Hip-Hop

This is the type of hip-hop young people should be listening to. Although, I'm not sure you can completely categorize it as hip-hop. It's more than that. This is a great album from beginning to end.

Must Buy!

Years Active: '00s

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, just as the civil unrest that rocked the country was beginning, rapper K'NAAN spent the early years of his life trying to avoid death and listening to the hip-hop records sent to him from America by his father, who had left Somalia earlier. When K'NAAN (whose name means "traveler" in Somali) was 13, he, his mother, and his two siblings were able to leave their homeland and join relatives in Harlem, where they stayed briefly before moving to Rexdale, Ontario, where there...
