iTunes Review
Making the transition from teen pop star to mature artist can be difficult — just ask Tiffany, Jessica Andrews or Lila McCann. Judging by Fearless, Taylor Swift is making the shift with commendable grace. Unlike other adolescent hit-makers, she laid the groundwork for her creative growth by asserting her songwriting skills early. As a result, Fearless’ tunes (all written or co-written by Swift) have far more sparkle and substance than most country/pop offerings these days. The songs here have the authentic ring of teenage angst and delight, with the emphasis on the travails of young love. Backed by chiming guitars and a buoyant pop backbeat, Swift sails through “Fearless,” “Hey Stephen,” and “You Belong With Me” with seeming boundless joy. Her happy moments are made all the more believable by such thoughtful tunes as “Fifteen” (a knowing glance back at high school) and “White Horse” (a snapshot of lost innocence). Swift is equally capable of tender invocations of childhood (“The Best Day”) and bittersweet breakup songs (“Breathe”). She's more than beaten the sophomore jinx with this outstanding release. If Fearless is any indication, fans will be following her musical evolution for years to come.

by Nic-chickMy Song-by-Song Review:
1) Fearless: 7/10. I love the lyrics, and it's a very high-energy song. It's got a light topic to it, and basically emphasizes Taylor's definition of fearless...that fearless means conquering your fears, even as small as they may be.
2) Fifteen: 10/10. This song is incredible, and underestimated. It's all about the bigger picture here, not just about how Taylor began high school. It's also how she changed during her freshman year and what she learned. It is about how Taylor was too young to clearly differentiate fantasy and reality. It's about losing innocence, too, also how Abigail loses her virginity. This chronicles a real transition from childhood to adulthood, and Taylor details every emotion so realistically.
3) Love Story: 9/10. This song is very well-written, with a catchy tune and descriptive, true lyrics. It's a creative spin on the famous Romeo and Juliet story, but with a happy ending. This song is good for listening to loud in the car, but it is also a song you can connect to on another level.
4) Hey Stephen: 8/10. This song shows vulnerability in a wistful way. It's very catchy and has a smooth but naked sort of arrangment, with a simple guitar and drum background. This song able to speak about loneliness and neglect without using a serious tone, and instead is more so playful.
5) White Horse: 9/10. This song is nearly like an epiphany. Taylor falls from her cloud of fantasy, and realizes harsh reality. She scolds herself for not having seen the truth, but at the end of the song, tries to pick herself up and start over. This song has a smooth, somber melody and very poignant, painfully true lyrics.
6) You Belong With Me: 8/10. This song is very upbeat and pop-ish, and has snappy lyrics backed by a contagious swing. The song echoes with desperate longing, but at the same time manages to be fun and lively.
7) Breathe: 7/10. Although this song has fairly good lyrics, the melody gets rather boring and the arrangment is too airy. But, this song has a strong message. It could either be about friends or romantic relationships, but nonetheless, it is about hurting a person and them walking away, but not being able to breathe without them.
8) Tell Me Why: 8/10. This song is defiant, telling about how Taylor is angry that someone's frightening attitude is crumbling her self-esteem. The arrangment is quick and one of the more country on the record, and has a harshly pleading tone to it.
9) You're Not Sorry: 7/10. Good lyrics, but the melody also gets kind of boring after a while. It talks about how Taylor is not believing a person's lies. This one has a great use of piano, which is not very common in Taylor's songs.
10) The Way I Loved You: 7/10. This song talks about the thrill of different kinds of romantic loves. The neat thing to this song is that it has a complicated story, so it is fun to figure it out. It's very high-energy, and has good lyrics.
11) Forever & Always: 10/10. This song is very strong. It is both angry and sad at the same time, and speaks about a relationship that unexpectedly went sour all of a sudden. There is a lot of poetry in the lyrics, and the tune is extremely catchy.
12) The Best Day: 9/10. This song, although dedicated to Taylor's mother, is about how every day of her life has been worth it because she has learned something, and her mother was by her side the whole time. She has flashbacks to both fond and painful memories in her childhood, and then shows her maturity by talking about herself in present time. This song is mostly guitar and is very calm.
13) Change: 8/10. Amazing lyrics. This song is powerful and inspirational, but the melody gets tiring after a while. It has strong drums and a lot of hard guitar, and is great to rock out to.
