iTunes Review

Tucson, Arizona's Calexico - featuring Giant Sand's Joey Burns (bass) and John Convertino (drums) as its core - play an eclectic mix of styles, tipping towards film composer Ennio Morricone's spaghetti westerns, '60s lounge pop, and surf instrumentals with hints of jazz and country sprinkled liberally throughout. Feast of Wire is their most disciplined release to date: a relaxed, subdued collection on the surface, it’s highlighted by short instrumental bursts of pedal steel, cello, synthesizers and whatever other instruments they happen to find. Burns takes a few solid turns at the mic, acting as a non-intrusive tour guide to the less-than-perfect world of "Sunken Waltz.” "Stevie Nicks" isn't quite the joke its title suggests, but rather a likeable folk song. Yet Calexico’s forte remains the instrumental ("Pepita," "Guero Canelo") where they seem to be scoring a soundtrack for a movie following outlaws around a desert where aural hallucinations haunt their dreams.

Customer Reviews

Excellent

The best of all Calexico albums, Feast of Wire reigns in thier sun-saoked, southwest sound with tight production, textured, intricate melodies, and Joey Burns quiet, contemplative vocals. Extraoridanary musicians round out Calexico making the experience like spending the day touring the wild southwest.

Good Stuff

Moody, longing music and vocals evocative of a gig in a lonely smokey border bar at 2 a.m. "Pepita" is a delight, as is "Woven Birds." If you like the sound of these pieces, you'll probably enjoy the whole collection. The band gets a "10" for originality--as far as I know, Calexico doesn't sound like anyone else out there. These days, that's a wonder.

Beautiful

My first exposure to Calexico is when a friend played me the song "Woven Birds," which is amongst the loveliest things I have ever heard. It is still one of my favorites on this record, but the rest of the tracks stand up favorably well. As a music geek I love all of the thoughtful textures. I am reminded of Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock" in that this is definitely a "studio" album where they have taken advantage of the tools available, but it does not sound over-wrought. For all the instruments and parts I still listen to this and think of real people playing these songs.
