iTunes Review
Faunts refine their contemporary synth-pop sound on their second full-length release, texturizing it with a vaporous sheen of shoegazer haze, while sculpting the songs into more cohesive wholes. Founded by brothers Steven and Tim Batke (both on guitars and vocals, while Tim also plays keyboards), Faunts added another sibling, Rob Batke, to the mix with additional keyboards and laptop wizardry. “It Hurts Me All The Time” opens with an irresistible dance beat and wending synth notes, worthy of the best Cure club hit. The winsome line, “It hurts me all the time,” is repeated in little more than a whisper over a warm, bouncy bass line and perky beats, working up to “yeah, it kills me all the time,” without changing tone. Elsewhere, the juxtaposition of a dance beat and such moody vocalizing — wrapped in cool reverb — carries the ethereal punch of early New Order, while sounding inarguably new and original. “Out On A Limb” has see-sawing guitars, shakers, handclaps, and bongos, and yet the distant sparkle of a glockenspiel and faint fluttering of a flute lends the tune an unmistakable sadness. Other standouts abound, including the Krautrock-lite of “Das Malefitz,” the ambient “So Far Away,” and the languorous pop of the opening and closing tracks.
Customer Reviews
Apple really is the company of the future.
I'm a huge fan of Faunts and have bought anything of theirs I've come across. Anyone else notice that this album was released on the 17th, that on Faunts' website it's due out on the 17th, that iTunes released it on what is to the rest of the world, February 3rd? I am by no means complaining as this means I can experience probably my favorite band's newest work two weeks before I expected to, it's like I'm getting Christmas presents in October. The music is all, of course, brilliant and inventive, although some of the songs are shorter than what Faunts fans should be used to. These songs are a bit less electronic and not as reminiscent of shoegaze as previous releases; the vocals and guitar being more prevalent in exchange for what seems like less post-production effects. This album has more of an alternative/indie rock feel and stands in contrast and compliment to the recently released Remixed. The music is of the highest quality and anyone who likes it should also check out the EP, M4 and go on from there.
I hate to say it but,
Some things just can't be left unsaid. This album is not the Faunts I love. Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. pales in comparison to the genius behind High Expectations/Low Results and M4. I can only stand to listen to a few of the tracks consecutively, and even that is a challenge when having to put up with those annoying digital drumbeats. Don't buy the Remixed album either. To anyone this offends, I'm sorry. I love Faunts, but I hate the direction they're taking, and I just needed to get that off my chest.
New Feel with new energy!
I felt that Faunts' first effort was a bit lacklaster but they've been showing steady improvements ever since. I really loved M4 a lot, however, whenever I'd play it for others it would get a mixed reaction primarily because some people simply didn't like the ethereal aspect of the EP. With Feel.Love.Thinking.Of, this argument goes out the window however. There's a new found energy here that wasn't present on the previous albums. The depth of sound is still there but it's now brought forward with a brighter feel that wasn't present before. I love this album. I really hope the band comes around the DC area sometime soon so I can see them perform.
