iTunes Review

The third in an ongoing series of vague tributes to random actresses, following Christina Ricci and Lisa Bonet, Rosie Perez finds Felt (alterna-rap heroes Murs and Slug) cutting loose over a cacophony of spazzy beats cooked up by Aesop Rock, who takes over the production duties previously helmed by Ant and the Grouch. Lyrically, they're all over the place, fusing party rhymes with relentless trash-talking, oddball hooks, in-jokes, and straight stories. Aesop's beat construction is both jarring and compelling, never satisfied with simple loops and breaks, instead overloaded with challenging percussion, unidentifiable samples, and no shortage of effects. Unlikely to find airplay on your local "HOT" radio station, it will nonetheless be eagerly devoured by the legions of insatiable Def Jux/Rhymesayers/Living Legends fans. "Glory Burning," "Deathmurdermayhem," and "Bass for Your Truck" are especially dope.

Customer Reviews

A Great Showing.

1. Protagonists - 7 – A nice start to the album. We get introduced to the new sound that comes as Aesop is producing. The sharp, heavy voice of Sean Daley is back, and the L.A. boy is not gone by any means either. But I’m not convinced this is all they bring on the album. 2. Felt Chewed Up - 7 – A cool, relaxed, good sounding ‘number 2’, cocky song that Slug and Murs do their best at. They both bring all they got, great flow, good dubbing in the background. A nice chorus really really makes you think Aesop is not ‘fucking around.’ Pardon the swear word, that’s the only way to describe it though, I’m sure you can attest. 3. Get Cake - 5 – Kind of boring and non-relevant skit that doesn’t make much sense in the first listen. Maybe they are saying these donuts are going to make the rest of the album better. Which is true. I give the beat some credit though. 4. Bass For Your Truck - 9 – Once of the better beats I’ve heard in a while. The nice technical sound that A Rock puts on his beats really works with both the Felt boys voices and imagery. Very nice tone delivers the point. 5. Like You – 6 – Mediocre work after the previous song. A little to cliché sounding to me. I think I might be one of the few who doesn’t like this song. I’m not sure why I’m not a fan, maybe just the vibe. But that’s just me, go listen for your self. I’m not trying to persuade my opinion, just sharing it. 6. Permanent Standby – 9 – Wow, this song really catches you off guard after the other pieces that came before, I think everyone (FELT and Aesop) found out that this was the best sound that they could make on the album, this song is essential in the flow of the album. Really nice work by Murs here. 7. Kevin Spacey - 8 – I like this skit. It is really nice and catchy enough to hang out to for 1:10. 8. Ghost Dance Deluxe – 8 – Some more great work from all here. Murs starts the verses off with another great tale of his determination to get that perfect girl he yearns for. Slug rips his portion of the track with ease, seemingly. Transitions from verses to chorus and vice versa couldn’t be any better. I love that quick breakdown. 9. Revisiting The Styleetron - 10 – Clearly the best song up to this point, again I’m reviewing live as I listen. So this song, basically, would be the best song to see in concert. Oh my lanta. Clearly can’t f**k with them at this stage on the record. Nice breakdown by A Rock late in the song to show off his ability. 10. Whaleface - 10 – Reminded me of ‘Missin Teeth’ by Brother Ali, with that TOO COCKY mentality, I love it so much when rappers come this hard on tracks. Especially that damn Atmosphere Emcee, we’re very blessed to have him to listen to. 11. Glory Burning - 9 – The core of the album continues in the jam as Slug tells a story of a man running, trying to get away. And as we all know, his story telling is some of the best, but well mixed with his old style to make a great verse. 12. Henrietta Longbottom – 7 – Another solid entry to the album, nothing too special. Another relatively cliché chorus that the boys could do better. 13. She Sonnet – 7 - Haha, funny play on words. Just another song that adds to the category of ‘Songs about Women’ that these do so often and so well. I want to give the song a 6 because it doesn’t do too much to me, I’ll tack the other point of for the work by A Rock. 14. Felt Good – 6 - The love for adding in short little verses that these guys do so much continues to show with this song. 15. Deathmurdermayhem – 10 - Damn, as the song starts you sit back and wait for Slug and Murs to rip-it-apart. This song is the ideal beat that Murs handles with his charm and ability perfectly. Too raw. Then Sean. This man, I don’t know what to say. Legendary, that’s the best way to describe his portion that he shines on this track. Then the work to end the track, amazing song in all aspects. 16. The Prize – 6 - Very cool work here, nice beat keeps both vocalists to continue their flow. The beat does get old after a while, but the lyrics make up for it. 17. G.I. Josephine – 8 - Sean brings his flow most comparable to something we’d hear off ‘Lemons’. Very profound and interesting stories that they each tell that can be found to have some parallels. 18. The Clap – 4- This piece has a Public Service Announcement feel to it, probably some sort of inside joke that would be more funny if I knew it as well. 19. We Have You Surrounded – 6 - I don’t think I’m a fan of these two ripping a verse apart in the telephone voice. It’s a cool change up, but a bit annoying. Crazy beat makes it worth listening to. 20. Give It Up – 9 - The instant vibe and knowing it’s the second last song make me get on the edge of my seat. Then the firm voice of Sean Daley comes in and makes you feel happy about your purchase. Another song that works great with their voices and styles. Definitely a very worthy candidate to begin the rapping up of things. 21. Paul Reubens – 7- Of course, the intro feels very last song sounding. Quickly spins off into the touch that Aesop puts on that works, but isn’t the best sound that these guys can do. It is a good song though, a nice message put into the words makes the song ok to check out. Also the reminder to stick in to FELT 4, and gives a special announcement.

Experimental Waste

Any Decent Reviewer On Here Is Fooling Themself. Atmos Listener Since '99 And This Is So Detached And Unrhythmic It Makes Me Remember Why I Stopped Buying Ace Rock's Albums After 'Labor'. It's Like These 3 Cats Feel They Have To Step Outside Of What We All Loved In The First Place Just To Keep 'Progressing'. Shovel-To-The-Head Dissapointed.

Great after a few listens

It toke me about 3 listens to like this, but it was really worth it. If you are a felt, an atmosphere or aesop fan, buy this and you wont be disappointed, just give it a few listens first.

Formed: 2001

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s

Felt initially started as a joke between friends Murs (from Living Legends) and Slug (from Atmosphere) after a discussion came up during a 2001 joint tour about who would have the best chance of sleeping with Christina Ricci. They eventually decided that dedicating an album to her would be most beneficial to their cause, and the next year, Slug went to L.A. to begin working on the project with Murs, taking only eight days to write and record A Tribute to Christina Ricci, which was produced by the...
