iTunes Review

Sounding much more like a breezy U.S. college band (think Vampire Weekend) than, say, France’s Daft Punk, French rock band Phoenix have nailed their sound down after more than a decade of permutation. For all the lofty, European implications of the record’s title, the most salient feature of these songs is the accessible, radio-friendly pop tones throughout, from the bubbling opener “Lisztomania” to the galloping “Lasso” and the slightly anthemic “Countdown.”  Both the opening track and the single “1901” are stellar examples of carefree, buoyant pop, full of snapping tom drums, percolating guitars and melodic hooks. Frontman Thomas Mars’ vocals are as focused and endearingly catchy as Emanuel Lundgren’s of I’m From Barcelona, or Britt Daniel’s of Spoon, and are an essential part of the band’s appeal. With clean and crisp lines, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a snapshot of a band coming together, exceeding expectations, and reveling in the wonderment of it all.

Daring, adventurous, brilliant pop music

This is it folks. This is an album by a band at the top of its form. If Phoenix don't hit the big time after this, there's something wrong with the world. I have had the tracks "Lisztomania" and "1901" for about a month or so now, and if digital copies could wear out like our tapes and CDs of old, I would need new digital copies of those songs for sure. I could tell I was in for something special with those 2 tracks alone.

I don't want to declare this album as Phoenix's masterpiece just yet because their last couple albums have been so solid and I still want to live with this one for a little before I make my ultimate judgment. But I can say that after just one listen I am thoroughly impressed. This album is crazy good, download the entire thing now, you will not regret it. I can't even name a standout track to download, just download them all, I swear every track is fantastic! They weren't kidding; the music here actually lives up to the audacious album title. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix indeed.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

This album is now one of my favorites, with each song packing a bigger punch than the other, with listeners being caught right in the middle of it all.
Liztomania... 9/10 very well done, and had an engaging tempo with catchy lyrics
1901... 7/10 while not one of my favorites, this song is decent, with an engaging chorus
Fences... 9/10 I loved this piece, and it clearly distinguishes this band from all others with their tone and music quality
Love Like a Sunset, Pt. I 8/10 great, very good tune if you are looking to relax
Love Like a Sunset, Pt. II 8/10 I consider the two parts as the same song, so they recieve the same score
Lasso 8/10 once again, well put together, and If you liked Liztomania, this is somewhat the same, just a slower tempo
Rome 8 1/2 out of 10 the instrumentals really pushed the song along, and made it quite enjoyable to listen to
Big Sun 9/10 I really liked this piece as much as Liztomania, easy tune to follow
Girlfriend 7/10 It was ok, but the group's stong vocals and instrumentals weren't pushed to their limit, which could be good or bad
Armistice 8/10 8/10 This is what I consider a good finish to a great album

If you want my personal opinion, I would sugest downloading Liztomania, Fences, Love Like a Sunset part 2, Lasso, and Big Sun. This is a strong group, and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix will be hopefully topping the charts soon enough Album rating... 8 1/2 stars!

Biography

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The French band Phoenix draws elements from an eclectic '80s upbringing to arrive at their rock-synth sound. Vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d'Arcy, and guitarist Christian Mazzalai were a garage band based out of Mars' house in the suburbs of Paris. Mazzalai's older brother Branco joined the band on guitar when his band Darlin' disbanded in 1995. The group got their touring start on the French bar circuit doing Hank Williams and Prince covers to drunk audiences. Two years later the band took...
