Customer Reviews

why?

i never found one song i liked on this album. i was so disappointed with what had been one of my favorite bands, until i heard this. (sigh)

Awesome

Don't understand other review if you love matw this album is essential

A somewhat abrupt, but pleasant switch.

I'll preface this by saying: don't pay any mind to Daniel Sonner's review, unless of course you hate pop. ; )

Well, after milking the hard gothic rock sound for 3 albums, Mad At the World (MATW) attempt yet another genre switch. This was a good thing, as they seemed to be running out of ideas on Through the Forest. With the hard rock sound kicked almost completely to the curb, MATW have now begun to embrace a style more akin to melodic 60s pop/rock. MATW have flirted with the more melodic pop rock approach before in previous songs like "All These Questions" from Boomerang and the cover of "If I Can Dream" from Through the Forest. In my opinion, they seem far more comfortable and natural here, musically. There's a sliver of edge leftover from their hard rock days, but the crunch is being more upstaged by the melody at this point. You can tell the band (or at least principal songwriter, Roger) had been listening to some Beatles, Jellyfish, or Posies. There's not a great deal in the way of creative lyrics, but anyone familiar with MATW knows they were never about leaving things open to interpretation. ("I was living like a zombie. Had the curse of sin upon me".)

This album sounds less underproduced than their previous album, Through the Forest, even if it was on an almost non-existent budget. If you were one of those that thought they screwed up when they abandoned synth pop, then this might not be for you. If you were about the heavy riffs and Randy's Danzig tributes, then you should definitely pass. But, if you stuck with the band because of songcraft, you should probably give it a spin or two.
