iTunes Review
With Fever Bullet For My Valentine deliver a third studio album taut with emotional tension and more complex song arrangements. Frontman Matthew Tuck was challenged to write both melody and lyrics at the same time, and producer Don Gilmore inspired Tuck to rewrite the melodies and lyrics (sometimes up to five times) on the songs he felt needed something stronger. And the proof is in the pounding, as opening cut “Your Betrayal” releases a slew of fast, punching rhythms before six-string staccato riffs let loose like machine-gun fire. Tuck’s vocals sound especially clean and prominent here, having resolved the throat complications that hindered his singing somewhat on the preceding album Scream Aim Fire. The moody ballad “A Place Where You Belong” finds him screaming with more authority than ever before, but it’s his confident mid-range vocal prowess that really stands out and shines. Similarly, “Bittersweet Memories” reveals that this Welsh metalcore quartet aren’t afraid to work on their ballads as much (if not more) than the harder stuff.

AMAZING NEW ALBUM
wow i was not expecting this. but this album is absolutely amazing. its like a mix of their first and second album. i was really impressed by this whole album.
Still Bullet but I Expected a Little More
Unlike some reviewers, I actually think B4MV's sound has been very consistent since their inception. I did not find "Scream Aim Fire" to be a huge departure from "The Poison." The only real difference stylistically between the two albums was that "Scream Aim Fire" was slightly more up tempo. Both albums had accessible melodies and standout clean vocals that sound tailored for the radio and arena audience. Their riffs have always been rather pedestrian, save for a few highlights such as "Eye of the Storm," but their songwriting craft and catchy choruses are what Bullet really has going for them and I think they know that; I don't think they gun too hard for metal street cred, but more than anything they pride themselves on streamlining the metalcore sound for the masses. I wouldn't call them sellouts. I would say, right from the start, they got into this game so they could get paid for doing what they love, tour the world and eat well.
"Fever," the band's third release, could be compared to Trivium's third release "The Crusade," in that it comes off as a piece of work that is A.) slightly phoned in/written during a creative lull in the band's career, and B.) trying too hard to please everyone, in the process alienating their fans a little. But also, just as "The Crusade" was still unmistakably a Trivium album and not completely without its own merits, "Fever" definitely does have the Bullet sound and fits in with their catalogue of work. What is most disappointing about it really, is that while it is still perfectly listenable it just noticeably feels like a step backwards in the evolution of the band's sound. It feels like this should have been their second album (it does sound closer to "The Poison" than "Scream Aim Fire" as Matt Tuck mentioned in interviews prior to the album's release), and "Scream Aim Fire" should be their third. In sum, if you ask me this is a lesser album than their last one, even if they perhaps tried to reach a broader audience. I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes, but if the band broke up tomorrow, "Fever" would definitely not become known as Bullet's best release.
I still like it, and at no point listening to it have I said to myself "this isn't the Bullet I know," it's just that as a metalhead it's kind of a letdown when I can play every riff on an album as soon as I hear it, and being that this is Bullet's bid for futher mainstream success, it is kind of watered down and oversimplified. Their are two tracks on here though, "Alone" and "Pretty on the Outside," that bump my album rating up at least a star from what I would have given it. These are definitely already two of my favorite songs by this band. If "Scream Aim Fire" hadn't been such a juggernaut (I definitely think it's their best of three) then I might be inclined to give this a better review, but knowing that they are capable of delivering more of what I like about them, I am a little disappointed that they decided to tone down their act for the sake of record sales.
Great Bullet CD!
Okay so I pre-ordered this CD from the Bullet website and so I got the album on friday, so i've had the chance to listen to it around twenty times so here is my opinion...
Fever is a STRONG album. Period. There aren't any terrible tracks, but there also aren't any superhit songs like their previous songs such as "Tears Don't Fall," "Hearts Burst Into Fire," and "Waking the Demon." Matt Tuck stated in interviews that they wanted to create an album that had all potential hit songs, comparing Fever to Metallica's Black Album. He said they weren't going to show off on any guitar, drum, or vocal skills at all, and I personally like bands that show off their skills and then pull it off live. It sets them apart from everyone else. I can't seem to find any AMAZING tracks but I will give the whole album an 8.5/10.
LIKES: The strong chorus's on "Breaking Out, Breaking Down" and "Pretty On the Outside." The Guitar intro and riffs on "Alone." The lyrical meaning on the songs "Bittersweet Memories" and "Dignity."
DISLIKES: The lack of a structured guitar solo on any of the songs. The fact that there aren't any metal songs like "Waking the Demon."
BUY THIS ALBUM!!! Totally worth the money! Don't steal it! Support BFMV!!
