Album Review

With Figure Number Five, Soilwork continues on the melodic, streamlined path forged on previous platter Natural Born Chaos (which marked a departure from the hectic, At the Gates-style death/thrash of the group's first three releases). Releasing Figure Number Five barely a year after its predecessor, the Swedes apparently struck while the iron was hot, riding the inspired wave of Chaos' songwriting into an even more hook-heavy realm. Immediately noticeable is the conciseness of the songs — only one surpasses the four-minute mark, the band trimming any unnecessary fat from the arrangements and scoring with several strong, hard jabs and a couple of jaw-busting uppercuts (i.e., "Rejection Role" and "Figure Number Five," the album's most aggressive track that proves Soilwork, despite an increasing emphasis on melody, is still cut from post-death metal cloth), "Light the Torch," and "Brickwalker," although the power ballad (!) "Departure Plan" doesn't quite convince. Vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid sounds more natural transitioning between the thrashy howl of the verses and the clean singing during the choruses, and the neo-prog keyboards mingle well with the carefully constructed riffs, which are compellingly thick and aggressive without being too busy or distracting from the song. Figure Number Five is a thoroughly fresh and exciting record, growing more powerful with each listen, even if death metal purists will bristle at the band's lack of "brutality." Point being, with each successive album, Soilwork is getting even more difficult to categorize, and therefore rising above any genre limitations. [Nuclear Blast issued a single-CD edition in 2006.]

Waaayy underrated

Damn, i dont see why so many people hate this album. Sure, it's no predators portrit or chainheart machine, but it's still soilwork and still damn good. Just give it a chance, it really is quite good. Anyways, i first heard of soilwork on youtube. I was watching an imflaes video: trigger. Someone commented how it was the reverse of a soilwork video: rejeection role, so i checked it out and was immediately blown away! Rejection role is an awesome song, best on cd. Anyway, i purchased this album sonn after and didnt wuite love it at first, but it grew on me (kinda like the jester race by in flames) I do reccomend this, but you may want to start with anther album, like chainheart machine or predators portrait. TIme for sog reviews. Rejection role: As i said, best song on album. Very catchy opening rif an a very good chorus. Guitar olo's also pretty good. 10/10 overload; Another great song, my second favorite. The riff is simple, but very catchy. This song also may have my favorite chorus (rivaled by rejection role) Great 10/10 figure number fivE: geeze, another amazing song! This is the heaviest on the cd, and actually shows some of speed's older growls! Yet another great chorus and one of the best solos. 10/10 Strangler: This is getting repetitive, but another great song. Love the chorus and short screams by speed. One of the best again. 9.5/10 light the torch: finally, a not amazing song. This is probably one of my least favorites, but it's still very good none the less. The techno elements are a bit weird, but the guitar solo is the best on the cd. 8.75/10 departure plan: what a surprise, a ballad. This is actually a pretty well done song, though definately not a normal soilwork song. Speed shows great clen vocals here and the chorus shines. Very nice song, it shows how soilwork can write softer songs 9.25/10 cranking the sirens: very caatchy chorus, and a very nice riff. PRetty good song here. 9/10 brickwalker: Similar to cranking the sirens, but slower. Nice chorus, and riff. Solid song. 9/10 the mindmaker: This song has an amazing riff. Unfortunately, the verse and the chorus dont reall shine much. If the song was based mre on that main heavy riff, this would be a much better song. Still very goo though, just couldve been better. 8.5/10 distortion sleep: took me a bit to like, but became one of my favorites. Amazing chorus, one of the best again. 9.5/10 downfall 24: NO idea what the hell the 24 stands for...ayway, a perfect closer. One of the best, great chorus, great pre chorus, great solo, very nice. 10/10 I do reccomend this, just get another soilwork album first, any of there albums 2-4 would be the best start if you're new to soilwork.

Fan-freakin-tastic!

When I first heard Overload from this cd, I was blown away. It's music you can't really categorize. They have a great blend of metal and electronic sounds. This is a new type of music that will be soon swiffering the nation. To get yourself started out, buy songs like Overload, Strangler, Cranking The Sirens, or Rejection Role.

Freaking amazing

This CD is amazing. I know it was already done but I'm gonna do it again, but ill keep it short: Rejection Role: Awesome riff and awesome chorus. Bam. Done. 10/10 Overload: Great intro great chorus. 10/10 Figure #5: Same deal. 10/10 Strangler: Don't listen to it too much but it is good 9/10 Light the Torch: Best chorus ever. 10/10 Departure plan: Not so good 7/10 Cranking the Sirens: AWESOME 10/10 Brickwalker: BEST SONG ON THE CD. Most underrated song ever. Amazing riff and spectacular chorus. 11/10 The Mindmaker: chorus is kind of lame but great riff 9/10 Downfall 24: Awesome ender 10/10 Yeah, I'm generous. I know their short descriptions but you get the points.

The Swedish metal sextet Soilwork formed in early 1997, fusing the country's signature ultra-heavy death metal sound with the power-groove riffs of late-'70s, early-'80s British and European metal. Vocalist Bjorn "Speed" Strid, guitarists Peter Wiches and Ola Frenning, and drummer Henry Ranta were all veterans of the Swedish scene by the time they recorded their first demo, In Dreams We Fall into the Eternal, in 1997; bassist Ola Flink became a permanent member afterward, as did keyboardist Carlos...
