Album Review
Seether's lead singer/songwriter, Shaun Morgan, is an unabashed, unapologetic worshiper of Kurt Cobain, using Nirvana's sound as a template for Seether and, more importantly, interpreting Kurt's teenage angst as something entirely un-ironic and confessional. This is a pretty skewed reading of Nirvana but not an uncommon one, and there have been scores of bands that have devoted their careers to ironing out every quirk in Cobain's legacy, with Seether being one of the more prominent of this legion in the new millennium. In Morgan's interpretation of Nirvana, music is just a vehicle for emotional catharsis and boy did he ever have a lot to get off his chest in 2007, as in the previous year he lost a guitarist; was subjected to the humiliation of his ex, Amy Lee, pretty much writing an entire album about him on Evanescence's The Open Door (including the withering hit single "Call Me When You're Sober"); and did a stint in rehab. All this turmoil is evident on their third proper album, Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, a title that hints at Morgan's propensity for purple prose (but not his predilection for profanity; the F-word powers more than a few choruses here). Those tortured and tormented words are at the center of Finding Beauty as Morgan pours out his soul, pairing naked emotional bloodlettings with jacked-up and overly polished active rock. He doesn't really put a unique spin on his angst, although "Rise Above This," a midtempo tune with an identifiable melodic hook, stands out. [A clean version was also released.]

Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces
Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces (10/10) 1. Like Suicide (10/10) This is a great opener. Good guitar and great screaming by Shaun Morgan. 2. Fake It (10/10) By far the best song on the album. This song has a variety of different sounds and guitars. Pure genius. 3. Breakdown (10/10) You have heard the rumors behind this song. True or not, this is a great song about being heart broken. A classic. 4. FMLYHM (10/10) Obviously Shaun Morgan was pretty angry when he wrote this. It’s great, one of the best on the album. 5. Fallen (8/10) The beastliest bass I have heard since Geddy Lee. Interesting lyrics and a sick chorus make this song amazing. 6. Rise Above This (9/10) Strong song about rising above suicide. Might be a little overrated, but this is a great song. 7. No Jesus Christ (8/10) I Love this song, and to all of those people who think it’s sacreligious, well, it’s not. Great guitar. 8. 6 Gun Quota (10/10) This song deserves more attention. Check out the chorus. This song is a manditory buy. 9. Walk Away from the Sun (8/10) This song is great. Somewhat deppresing lyrics, however. I don’t know, some may like that. 10. Eyes of the Devil (7/10) Obviously Shaun Morgan is searching, saying “Run with the Eyes of the Devil,” and at the end, asking “Jesus, Save Me, I’m weak!” 11. Don’t Believe (7/10 The best part of this song is the semi-breakdown right before the chorus. 12. Waste (7/10) Probably my least favorite on the album, but still descent. Love the off-tune sections. 13. Careless Whisper(10/10) One of the best covers I have ever heard in my life. They took a horrible sung song and made it a classic. Seether is definitely a very talented band. “Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces” is definitely Seether’s best work of art. There earlier albums are definitely marvels, but this album blew them away. I definitely feel sorrow for Seether’s frontman Shaun Morgan. He has had a hard life, not to mention his brother’s suicide before the recording of “Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces.” I definitely recommend you buy this album, though. This will be looked back on as one of the 2000’s best rock albums, mark my words.
Amazing Album
This band composes of some gritty vocals and a high power high fuzzed up guitar with some cymbal smashing drums. Overall, this album in particular (the best Seether album yet), has an amazing amount of great songs. Eyes of the Devil starts off slowly, but ends up crashing down on you after a minute in an intense chorus, with FMLYHM coming strong right off the bat about 30 seconds into the song. Careless Whisper is obviously a keeper, a great cover of a song i previously did not like. I would reccomend this album to any hard rock, metal or music fan.
absolutely worth it!!!
Especially love their version of careless whisper...it's better than the Wham! original (for those of us who rock on the harder side).
