iTunes Review
After a detour into rock-heavy experimentation on 2002’s Electric Circus, Common hooked up with producer-of-the-moment Kanye West for 2005’s Be, a commercial and critical resurgence. West again handles most of the production duties on this follow-up, which may be (slightly) less polished and fluid, but ultimately more ambitious, earthy, and rewarding. The spirit of the late producer J Dilla is reflected in the sonic inventiveness and often solemn mood. Using samples ranging from Ethiopian jazz (“The Game”) to Paul Simon (“Forever Begins”) to “Windmills of Your Mind” (“Start the Show”) to Gil Scott-Heron (“The People”) to Stevie Wonder and Syreeta (“U, Black Maybe”), West provides a wide range of suitably impressive settings — hard-hitting and serious, dreamy and reflective, quirky and playful, soulful and seductive — for Common’s sly, supple, thoughtful flow. Dilla himself produced the track for the silky-smooth, R&B-flavored “So Far to Go,” which features vocals from long-lost but much-beloved D’Angelo. Will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas takes over the production reins (and chorus vocals) for the tired “I Want You,” doing Common no favors in the process and reminding us how far the Peas have fallen. Things are much more impressive with producer Devo Springsteen at the helm, who contributes “Misunderstood,” a stunning track built around a plaintive Nina Simone sample and finding Common at his most introspective.
Customer Reviews
probably rap album of the year
intro- kind boring especially compared to the intro on Be which was one of the best songs start the show- awesome beat, "its the c-o-double m-o-n, synonym for fresh" damn, great way to start out 5/5 the people- absolutly amazing song, kanyes production is superb, once again very good beat and lyrics 5/5 Drivin me wild- the first of many love songs/ songs about women.second or third best song 5/5 I want you- nice track. Will.I.Am is on the hook and beat. 5/5 Southside- might be my favorite song. Kanye comes out very strong "it must be armour flow, cuz it never gets rusty", but common doesn't let him steal the show coming just as hard (5/5) The game- got that boom bap feel with premo scratchin, good track 5/5 black maybe- i don't love the beat but some of his more impresive lyrics. 4/5 so far to go- origanaly on Dilla's The Shining, only with new lyrics and slightly diff intro, which actually helps alot 4/5 Break my heart- seems sort of repedative at this point, still not bad 4/5 misunderstood- very very good beat, probably the best on the cd and perfect for the strories common spits over, damn kanyes good on the production 5/5 forever begins- another unbelievable beat, and a perfect way to finish off the cd, the last three minutes is his dad, like on Resurection pop raps 5/5 play your cards right- i'm guessing a j. dilla beat (it sounds like that anyway) 5/5 Overall this album is nothing short of great, i never thought that common would be able to make an album better than ressurection but i think he was able to this time.
Com Sense Makes Hip Hop Beauty (Forget Young Joc, Yung Berg, UNK, Hurricane Chris and rest)
I was up all night waiting for itunes to put this album up and it's finally here! First off I would give this album 51/2 stars only because Common's lyrics in this album were SLIGHTLY weaker. My favorite song on this album is "Black Maybe" which really shines both lyrically and in production. "break My Heart" is so familiar to old school hip hip love songs that the likes of Slick Rick and LL have embraced. This album is solid Hip Hop, but not better than Be. I wish I can take selects from Be and Finding Forever, meld them together and there's a true CLASSIC. The banger has got to be "The People". Def worth the money. Common continues his well done skill of being a conscience MC. So all you mainstream fans that like to listen to music that dulls your brain, at least give this album a chance so that for once you can experience enlightenment. Great job Common, this will keep you comfy for the next year or so.
REAL HIP HOP
THIS IS MC'ing Right Here...at it's Finest...Chi-Town's Finest...Much Love to Common for shinning a Light of Hope in these Dark Ages of Hip Hop...
