iTunes Review
Ozomatli are a Los Angeles-based group who work their way through rock, soul, hip-hop, rhumba, mariachi-flavored funk and just about any other genre they can sneak into the rhythm scheme. Fire Away is produced by veteran producer Tony Berg who has worked with everyone from Bruce Hornsby to Public Image Ltd. He’s brought in here to capture the band’s live sound and with 11 tracks in just over 36 minutes he keeps this album on target. This is tight, powerful music, often exhilarating, often played with a feeling that they’re attempting to outrun the law and succeeding. “Malagasy Shock” is practically punk in its attack. The backing vocals serve as a spirited chant encouraging the band to play louder, faster, harder. “Cabaliito” turns the party from polka to salsa with the horn section adding its spirits. The cover of the Pogues’ “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” takes the song’s Irish roots and replants it as a Latin soul number. Yet, the band can also turn it down for the slow dance of “It’s Only Time” and the sweet shuffle of “Love Comes Down.”
Customer Reviews
Wanna know what a bunch of guys having fun sounds like?
This album completely lacks definition. There's no focal point, at all. It sounds like a group of guys went into a garage and started playing with the instruments that were laying around. Which is probably why I like the album. It really shows how well a band can do when they throw conformity to the wind and just have fun with music. I don't see this going platinum any time soon, but if you want a fun album that has a pretty diverse catalog of musical styles, I'd recommend it.
Que?
Is it just me, or has this band really changed their style and sound here? Did they change lead singers? They're doing some very different things... but not in an exciting way... bummer
