iTunes Review

Although they might not have realized it at the time, the Meters took another small step toward evolving into the outfit known as the Neville Brothers on the 1975's Fire on the Bayou: Keyboardist Art was joined by brother Cyril Neville on percussion. Fire, again co-produced by the band and Allen Toussaint, was a bit slicker than the previous Rejuvenation. But the record, even with its moves toward mixing some white rock stylings into the funk — they cover the Three Dog Night hit “Liar” — is still drenched in the Meters’ idiosyncrasies. Among these are the pre-rock rhyme of “bottle of wine” with “dollar and a dime” on the title track, not to mention the uproarious playing-the-dozens novelty of “They All Ask’d for You.” And of course those rhythms.

"Talkin' 'Bout New Orleans!"

.."Got Me Hypnotized!".."Yeah; You Right! "Just Got To Be The Funkiest One In Town!" The full compliment of what would later evolve into The Neville Brothers began with this sizzling slab of vinyl from the mighty Meters! {Covering tunes that are on every jukebox in the Cresent City & Assisted (again) by Alan Toussaint's studio sophistication+ syncopation; "Fire On The Bayou" hit it big up North as well as down South!} Continuing with their trademark Spicy Gumbo recipie of: Rockin' guitar+Poppin' bass+Dynamite drummin'+Pumpin' organ+Vibrant vocals=All helped to put The Meters (and New Orleans Funk!) on the Map! Most Definitely a "Soulful Seventies Set!"...by Grimmbo.

The Meters defined New Orleans funk, not only on their own recordings, but also as the backing band for numerous artists, including many produced by Allen Toussaint. Where the funk of Sly Stone and James Brown was wild, careening, and determinedly urban, the Meters were down-home and earthy. Nearly all of their own recordings were instrumentals, putting the emphasis on the organic and complex rhythms. The syncopated, layered percussion intertwined with the gritty grooves of the guitar and organ,...
