iTunes Review

A tremendously soulful singer from Santa Monica, Teena Marie was signed to Motown in the late ‘70s, where she was taken under the wing of Rick James, who produced her debut album Wild and Peaceful, best known for the hit single "I'm Just a Sucker For Your Love." Over a 30 year span, she released 13 solo albums, racked up several gold and platinum plaques, appeared on several TV shows (she was the first white female singer on Soul Train), and helped lay the foundation for hip-hop via samples and interpolations (see: the Fugees' first smash "Fu-Gee-La"). Into the new millennium, she was signed to New Orleans' rap powerhouse Cash Money Records, and was recording a new album when she passed away the day after Christmas in 2010. This compilation digs into the Motown vaults for a dozen early tracks that showcase her colorblind vocal prowess. Check out "Why Can't I Get Next To You," "Wasn't I Good To You," "Hey Boy," and "White Soul."

The legacy...

I know this is motown trying cash in but who cares? It's Teena and thats all that matters to me!! We're gonna hear the usual "its not classic Teena" blah blah blah...move on nobody cares..

Hear the raw talent here!

I have heard some of these songs in other versions -- some by Teena herself, but I love to hear the rawness of demos, even tho' it's after she's gone...this is a treasure, folks, plain and simple.

It's About Time!

What a joy it is to have all of this unreleased vault material finally available to the public. And what a joy it is to have a compilation that's not the usual redundant track listing that we've seen on so many Teena compilations over the years. Hip-O has done a great job at restoring these lost treasures. Can't wait for the CD release later this year!

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
