Album Review

A mix of quintessential Strokes songs and daring experimentation, First Impressions of Earth features "You Only Live Once," which is everything a fan could want from a Strokes song: a joyful melody, skipping rhythm, and cheerfully snotty lyrics. "Juicebox," meanwhile, mixes a bassline nicked from the "Peter Gunn Theme" and ragged grunge before landing on a soaring chorus; love it or hate it, the song has unforgettable boldness and creativity. While jaded lyrical territory is nothing new for the Strokes, there's a new depth to the ennui; on the blasé ballad "Ask Me Anything," Casablancas repeats "I've got nothing to say" so often that the listener has no choice but to believe him. However, the band regains its fire on "Ize of the World" and "Razorblade."

iTunes...what harmeth thee?

I am not sure who the slouch is who wrote the "official" iTunes review for this album.... but they should not have a job tomorrow. This album is beautiful in both scope and sound. It is an expansion on the previous two classics the Strokes released, and has many fantastic tracks. "You Only Live Once", "Juicebox", "Vision of Division", and "Ize of the World" are just as musically brilliant as the Strokes previous works, with lyrics and vocals that almost surpass Casablancas' previous efforts. This iTunes review is exactly why American radio and music is going downhill so quickly: bands like the Strokes are drastically underappreciated and underrated here, while in the UK and Australia they hand them awards like they are candy and sell out every venue in every city everytime. If America would listen to more music like First Impressions, and less Lady GaGa and Britney Spears maybe we would have a few less problems.

This Album is Fantastic

Whoever wrote this review knows absolutely nothing about The Strokes. This album is actually their best work to date. Don't be fooled by this terrible review. Songs like "Vision of Division" and "Ize of the World" will change the way you listen to music. This is the album where the musicians really show you what they can do. This is probably the most underappreciated album from the past 10 years. I just think The Strokes are ahead of their time.

Don't read the iTunes review

That iTunes review really is garbage. It is a typical Rolling Stone album review trashing an album because its not like the band's former albums. I've downloaded bits and pieces of this and its hardcore. The guitarist for this band completely shreds and the music is much crisper than previous Strokes. Just listen to the first four tracks and let your ears decide, not some dope that gets paid to try too hard to be edgy.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in New York, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Equally inspired by classic tunesmiths like Buddy Holly and John Lennon and the street-smart attitude and angular riffs of fellow New Yorkers Television and the Velvet Underground, the Strokes were also equally blessed and cursed with an enormous amount of hype — particularly from the U.K. music press, whose adulation for the group rivaled their fervor for Oasis in the early '90s. Barely in their twenties by the time their debut album, Is This It, arrived in 2001, singer/songwriter Julian Casablancas,...
