iTunes Review

When Film School’s record label Beggar’s Banquet became a catalog-only underling of parent company The Beggars Group, the band might have thrown in the towel as many do. Instead, they powered on, and released their fourth full-length, Fission. Founder and central member Greg Bartens has assembled a band capable of veering ably from a viably commercial alt-sound (“Waited,” “Sunny Day,” “Bones”) to the darker tones they’re known for (the spookily pretty “Time to Listen,” the industrial-rooted “Direct”), all the while spicing the mix with plenty of other flavors. On tracks like “Nothing’s Mine” and “Find You Out,” bassist Lorelei Plotczyk’s breathy vocals riding the layers of atmospheric guitars put the tunes squarely in the house of classic shoegazing and ‘90s 4AD bands, yet gurgling synths and clanging guitars on songs like “Still Might,” “When I’m Yours,” and “Distant Life” lend Fission some muscle. This collection sparkles with a new energy, wise production choices, and Bartens’ excellent songwriting, and should appeal to an ever-widening audience.

What happened?

Film School's latest album is such a departure from anything else they've done that it doesn't even sound like Film School. If I had to pick one word to describe it, it would be "commercial." It's as commercial as they could possibly make it, and a giant slap in the face for anyone who has called themselves a fan. The moody, dark atmosphere created especially with their first album is replaced with extremely generic alt. rock toe-tappers that try way to hard to scream for acceptance and attention at what seems like their last shot at making it big. If you're a fan, avoid this album. You'll be happy you did.

Awesome Album

Going to keep it simple. This album is somewhat of a departure from the fuzzed out bliss of their Beggar's Banquet period. BUT as all bands move forward and hopefully mature with their song writing, Film School's Third proper release does anything but disappoint. It's been on constant rotation since i picked it up. Pumped to see them live again on this tour.

Best FS album yet

Really impressed with these moody kids. Always feels like I'm driving across country listening to their stuff.

Inspired by post-punk, dream pop, and a touch of electronica, the San Francisco-via-New York quintet Film School began as the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Krayg Burton (aka Greg Bertens), who began recording under the Film School name in the late '90s. After releasing the I'm Not Working 7" on MeToo! Records, Burton joined forces with a rotating cast of musicians to make 2001's full-length A Brilliant Career, including members of F**k and Elephone as well as Pavement and Preston School of Industry's...
